Skyhawks book 16th-straight trip to NCAA Division II Championships
HOPKINTON, N.H. (November 8, 2015) – The Stonehill College women's cross country team, ranked 16th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II poll, and ranked first in the East Region, earned its 16th consecutive NCAA Division II National Championship berth, by finishing first among 28 squads en route to its sixth East Region title in the past seven years, and 13th in program history, today at the Hopkinton State Fairgrounds.
Stonehill, which won the Northeast-10 Championship two weekends ago with a dominant 23 point effort, was nearly as impressive today, capturing the East Region title with 48 points. Roberts Wesleyan College placed second in team scoring with 128 points, followed by St. Thomas Aquinas College (160 points), Daemen College (178 points), and Bentley University (180 points).
Junior co-captain Nicole Borofski (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North), who paced the Skyhawks two weekends ago with her first-place finish at the Northeast-10 Conference Championship, accomplished the same feat today, winning the NCAA Division II East Regional Championship with a time of 21:12.5. Borofski is the first Individual champion for Stonehill since Erin Carmone in 2009.
Freshmen Elizabeth Hannon (Franklin, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan) and recently crowned Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the year Makenzie Cyr (Douglas, Massachusetts/Douglas), recorded top ten finishes, coming in fifth and tenth place, respectively. Hannon finished with a time of 21:55.7, while Cyr completed the course in 22:02.1. Both freshmen earned All-Region honors with their performances.
Junior co-captain Aisha McAdams (North Kingstown, Rhode Island/North Kingstown) earned her second straight All-Region honors, clocking in at 22:12.8, good for 15th place. Classmate Alexandra Buonfiglio (Lynnfield, Massachusetts/Lynnfield) was also named to her second straight All-Region team, finishing in 17th place with a time of 22:17.3.
Rounding out Stonehill's six All-Region performers today was sophomore Emily Knox (Worcester, Massachusetts/Notre Dame Academy), who finished 22nd out of 186 overall entries and earned a time of 22:32.5.
Junior Alexandra Grimaldo (Marlborough, Massachusetts/Marlborough) was the final Skyhawk to complete today's course, doing so in 22:49.6, good for 29th overall.
The Stonehill College women's team will be joined by the men's squad, who finished third overall today advancing to nationals for the 13th straight season, at the NCAA Division II National Championships in Joplin, Missouri on Saturday, November 21st.
