McAdams, Cyr, Buonfiglio all finish in top-five for Skyhawks
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (September 26, 2015) – Led by a trio of top-five finishers, the Stonehill College women's cross country team, ranked No. 16 in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II Poll, claimed first place this morning at the Ted Owen Invitational, hosted by Central Connecticut State University at Stanley Park in New Britain, Connecticut.
Competing in a nine-team field that included five Division I programs, Stonehill placed all five of its scoring runners inside the top-12 en route to a score of 35. The University of Rhode Island finished second (55), while Marist College (80) and host Central Connecticut (81) placed third and fourth, respectively.
Junior Aisha McAdams (North Kingstown, Rhode Island/North Kingstown) paced the Skyhawks, completing the five-kilometer course in 18:49.8, good for third overall out of 88 competitors.
Freshman Makenzie Cyr (Douglas, Massachusetts/Douglas) continued the impressive start to her collegiate career with her third consecutive top-10 performance, as she followed McAdams in fourth place and clocked in at 18:50.0.
Finishing just a tenth of a second behind Cyr was junior Alexandra Buonfiglio (Lynnfield, Massachusetts/Lynnfield), who turned in her second straight top-ten effort, placing fifth in 18:50.1.
Rounding out Stonehill's five scoring runners was freshman Elizabeth Hannon (Franklin, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan) and junior Alexandra Grimaldo (Marlborough, Massachusetts/Marlborough), who placed 11th and 12th, respectively, with near identical times of 19:19.9 and 19:20.0.
Stonehill's next two finishers were freshmen Jillian Caiazzi (Marlborough, Massachusetts/Marlborough) and Jackie Cutillo (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan). Caiazzi finished 17th in 19:30.3, and Cutillo was right behind in 18th place with a time of 19:31.3.
Also finishing back-to-back were freshman Anna DeVitto (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) and sophomore Abby Hersom (Rockland, Maine/Oceanside). DeVitto turned in a time of 20:16.3, good for 34th overall, while Hersom placed 35th in 20:16.4.
Making her collegiate debut, freshman Taylor Landers (North Andover, Massachusetts/Pingree School) was the final Skyhawk to cross the finish line, posting a 49th place finish in 20:50.1.
Stonehill will be off next weekend before returning to action on Saturday, October 10th at the New England Championships, to be held at Franklin Park in Dorchester, Massachusetts.
