EAST STROUDSBURG, Pennsylvania (September 20, 2019) – The Stonehill College volleyball team opened up the NE10/CACC/PSAC Challenge with a 3-1 victory over Caldwell University and a 3-0 loss against East Stroudsburg University Friday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Match 1: Stonehill 3 – Caldwell 1
Stonehill saw three Skyhawks with double-digit kills, including sophomore Abby Remick with a match-high 20 kills, and junior Sophia Poveda with her 10th-career double-double registering 13 kills and 12 digs. Freshman Basia Peragine tallied her first-career double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs.
The Skyhawks dominated in the first frame with a .390 hitting percentage, outhitting the Cougars with their .194 hitting percentage. Caldwell just about closed out the first set, 24-20, but Stonehill ran with a 9-3 rally to come up on top, 29-27.
Caldwell opened the second set with a 13-4 advantage, but Stonehill went on an 11-1 run for their first lead of the frame, 15-14. There were six tied scores before the Cougars edged the Skyhawks 26-24.
Stonehill once again ran with the frame in the third set as they saw the lead throughout including their largest advantage of nine, 21-12, before winning 25-18.
Remick led the way for the Skyhawks in the fourth set, as she recorded seven of her 20 kills, as Stonehill kept the lead throughout including their largest advantage of 14, 21-7, before securing the match 25-18.
Match 2: Stonehill 0 – East Stroudsburg 3
Peragine recorded a team-high seven kills in the loss, as East Stroudsburg blew out the Skyhawks in the first set with their .579 hitting percentage, taking set one, 25-10.
The Skyhawks stayed within three points, until the Warriors ran with a 6-1 rally to extend its lead to seven, 17-10 in the second set. The score toggled back and forth, as Stonehill came within five, but East Stroudsburg finished the frame with a six-point advantage, 25-19.
Stonehill saw its first lead of the match in the third frame, 3-2, before the Warriors ran with the rest of the frame to take the match in three-straight sets, 25-22.
Stonehill will face Jefferson University at 4:00 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, September 21, followed by another non-conference battle against West Chester University with a start time of 6:00 p.m.
