MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (August 26, 2018) – The Stonehill College volleyball team blanked Southern New Hampshire University in three sets, 3-0, for their first victory of the season at Spirou Field House in Manchester, New Hampshire on Sunday. The Skyhawks won with set scores of 25-18, 25-22, and 25-14.

Senior Allyson Hughes (Modesto, California/Big Valley Christian) saw her third-straight match with double-digit kills, as she totaled 11 for a match-high, while also chipping in a match and career high five blocks. Freshman Clare Feeman (Shelby Charter Township, Michigan/Utica) registered her first collegiate match with double-digit kills, totaling 10 in the win and adding in four blocks. Senior Megan Pennino (Wantagh, New York/Wantagh) was also strong at the net tallying four blocks, while freshman setter Lauren Wilke (Blue Point, New York/Bayport – Blue Point) collected her third-career double-double with 30 assists and 10 digs.

Southern N.H. held the lead, 9-6, until Stonehill ran with a 12-3 advantage to see its first and biggest lead of the set, 18-12. The Penmen fought back with a 6-1 run to close the gap to one, 19-18, but the Skyhawks gained the momentum back and scoring six-straight points for a 25-18 victory.


Feeman tallied her first-collegiate double-digit game with 10 kills

As play toggled back and forth in the second set, the two teams tied the game 10 times. Southern N.H. picked up its second lead of the set with a one-point advantage, 13-12, and Stonehill responded with a 7-1 run to regain the lead, 19-14. The Skyhawks were unable to stop five-straight points from the Penmen for the final tie of the set, 19-19, and Southern N.H. came within one once again, 23-22, before the Skyhawks capitalized off of the Penmen's errors for a second set win, 25-22.

The Skyhawks' saw the lead throughout the third set as well as a .346 hitting average which was the game decider, as the Penmen notched a .069 hitting average. Stonehill held its largest lead of 11 five times during the third game, while Southern N.H. was only able to come within one, twice, 3-2 and 5-4, during the final frame. The Skyhawks won with an 11-point difference, 25-14, for its first win of the season.

Stonehill will host Felician College, Georgian Court University, and Merrimack College in its annual Skyhawk Invitational this Saturday and Sunday at Merkert Gymnasium. The Skyhawks will open the Invitational with Felician College on Saturday, September 1 with a start time of 1:00 p.m., followed by Georgian Court on Sunday, September 2 at 10:00 a.m. and Merrimack at 5:30 p.m.
