Stonehill Earns Second NCAA Tournament Bid In Program History (UPDATED w/Schedule)


NE-10 Player of the Year Emily Iverson and third-seeded Stonehill will make their second NCAA Tournament appearance in program history on Thursday with a first round matchup against sixth-seeded LIU Post.

Third-seeded Skyhawks will head to Bridgeport, Conn. on Thursday to take on sixth-seeded LIU Post at noon

EASTON, Mass. (November 16, 2014) – The Stonehill College volleyball team, ranked No. 3 in the latest NCAA East Region Rankings, has earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Tournament for the second time in program history.

The Skyhawks were selected as the third seed in the East Region and are matched up with sixth-seeded LIU Post (19-13, 11-5 East Coast Conference) in the first round, which will take place on Thursday, November 20th. Stonehill's contest is set for noon and will be the first of four first round matches on Thursday. The University of Bridgeport (24-2, 16-0 ECC) earned the top seed and will host the East Regional at Hubbell Gymnasium, with the Purple Knights taking on No. 8 seed Post University (22-10, 14-5 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference) at 5 p.m. The other opening round contests include No. 4 Bentley University (18-11, 11-3 NE-10) against No. 5 Adelphi University (16-14, 10-4 NE-10) in a rematch of Saturday's Northeast-10 Conference Championship final at 7:30 p.m., and No. 2 the University of New Haven (21-8, 11-3 NE-10) against No. 7 The College of Saint Rose (18-8, 10-4 NE-10) at 2:30 p.m.

The winner of the East Region will advance to the NCAA DII Quarterfinals, which will be held on Thursday, December 4th, in Louisville, Kentucky.

Stonehill and LIU Post met on September 20th of this season, with the Pioneers posting a 3-0 victory in Brookville, New York. Senior setter and NE-10 Player of the Year Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Illinois/York) led the Skyhawks with 28 assists and 11 digs, while junior Melissa Hansen (Colorado Springs, Colorado/Mesa Ridge) hit .467 with eight kills and six block assists for LIU Post.

Stonehill earned its first NCAA bid in 2011 after posting a 14-1 record in conference play and an overall mark of 27-6. The Skyhawks fell to Adelphi, 3-1, in the first round after dropping an NE-10 semifinal round contest to the Panthers.

Stonehill (21-7, 11-3 NE-10) earned a share of its first regular season NE-10 title in program history after finishing in a three-way tie with New Haven and Bentley. The Skyhawks defeated Southern New Hampshire University, 3-1, in the NE-10 Championship quarterfinal round before falling to Bentley, 3-0, in the semifinals.
