Stonehill Tops Holy Family At Wildcat Invitational, 3-2

NEWARK, Del. (September 12, 2014) – The Stonehill College volleyball team opened its trip at the Wildcat Regional Invitational with a 3-2 (28-26, 25-19, 24-26, 24-26, 15-9) victory over Holy Family University this evening at WU Athletics Complex on the campus of Wilmington University in Newark, Delaware.

Senior middle blocker Mary-Kate Catton (San Diego, California/Academy of Our Lady of Peace) led the Skyhawks with a strong all-around effort, as she hit .345 with 13 kills and five service aces to go with ten digs and three blocks.

Senior setter Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Illinois/York) facilitated the Skyhawk offense with 48 assists, while also adding 12 digs, six kills, three block assists and one ace. Junior outside hitter Delia Phillips (St. James, New York/Smithtown East) registered her first double-double of the season with 14 kills and 11 digs, and senior Meaghan Lee (Hanover, Massachusetts/Notre Dame Academy) contributed seven kills and three blocks.

Defensively, Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard) posted a season and match-high 30 digs, while junior Kelsey Weymouth (North Attleboro, Massachusetts/North Attleboro) tallied 16 digs.

Stonehill appeared poised to sweep Holy Family for the second time in a week, as the Skyhawks won the first two sets this evening before dropping consecutive frames to the Tigers by matching 26-24 scores. Stonehill rebounded to take the final set, 15-9, to earn the victory in its first five-set match of the season.

Holy Family was led by senior outside hitter Devyn Ingram (King of Prussia, Pennsylvania/Upper Merion), who recorded a team-best 19 digs and ten kills. Junior Rachel Johnson (New Lenox, Illinois/Lincoln Way West) also posted a double-double with 14 digs and ten kills, while freshman Melanie Ingram (King of Prussia, Pennsylvania/Upper Merion) totaled 15 digs and ten kills.

With tonight's win, Stonehill improves to 2-0 this season against Holy Family. The two teams played at last weekend's Millersville Marauder Clash, with the Skyhawks earning a 3-0 sweep.

Stonehill (4-1, 0-0 NE-10) will be back in action tomorrow with two more matches at the Wildcat Invitational. The Skyhawks are slated to take on Dowling College at noon before playing host Wilmington at 4 p.m. Holy Family (2-5, 0-1 CACC) will also be in action tomorrow with two more matches in Newark. The Tigers are set to play Millersville University at 10 a.m., before taking on Bentley University at noon.
