Skyhawks improve to 7-3 in NE-10

EASTON, Mass. (November 8, 2013) – The Stonehill College volleyball team earned an impressive conference victory tonight, defeating visiting Adelphi University 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-17, 25-23) in Northeast-10 action at Merkert Gymnasium.

Stonehill outside hitter Delia Phillips (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) continued the torrid play that she has been displaying all season, as the sophomore posted her 12th double-double of the year with 18 kills and 13 digs. Phillips added two aces and two blocks to spark the Skyhawks to their biggest conference win thus far in 2013.

Senior captain Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover) was second on Stonehill with 14 kills, while also contributing four digs and a team-high four blocks defensively. With her 14 kills, Arvidson moves closer to 1000 career kills, as the right side hitter has now registered 979 in a Stonehill uniform after her effort tonight.

Junior setter Emily Iverson (Elmhurst Ill./York) dished out a match-high 40 assists to go with eight digs and two kills, and senior captain Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) recorded 11 digs and four kills in Stonehill's win.

Adelphi came into tonight's match boasting both the reigning NE-10 Player of the Week in junior Kaitlyn DeStefano (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), and the reigning NE-10 Setter of the Week in senior Katie Bryson (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa). The Panthers also had the second best record in the NE-10 at 9-2, behind only the University of New Haven's perfect 10-0 mark.

DeStefano was held to only six kills, but she did make her presence felt on the defensive end with eight total blocks. Bryson recorded 23 assists with three aces and nine digs, but was well under her average of 8.77 assists per set this season. Junior outside hitter Haley Blunt (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) recorded 18 digs and seven kills, and freshman outside hitter Amanda Borges (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) tallied ten digs and seven kills.

Stonehill was able to build a 17-9 lead in the opening frame with the help of several Adelphi service errors. The Panthers rebounded to make the set competetive, but Stonehill emerged with a 25-23 win. Adelphi evened things up in the second set, before Stonehill regained control of the match in the third frame. The final set was a back and forth affair, with several ties and lead changes. Down 18-17, Stonehill utilized three kills by Phillips to pull ahead and seal the win.

Stonehill (15-11, 7-3 NE-10) returns to action tomorrow afternoon, as the Skyhawks host Pace University at 1 p.m. The match will serve as Senior Day for Arvidson, Maxey, Jessica Frankowski (Unionville, Conn./Farmington), and Rachel Sperando (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park), who will be honored before the start of the contest.
