Phillips records 11th double-double of '13
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (October 29, 2013) – The Stonehill College volleyball team rebounded from a tight opening set loss to win three frames in a row, defeating Merrimack College tonight 3-1 (24-26, 25-16, 25-19, 25-21) in Northeast-10 action at Hammel Court. With the victory, Stonehill improves to 6-2 in conference play.
Sophomore outside hitter Delia Phillips (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) posted her second consecutive double-double, and 11th of the season, as she hit .324 with 16 kills and 14 digs to lead Stonehill to its second straight triumph. Senior captain Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover) hit a team-best .343 with 16 kills and two blocks, and fellow captain Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) led all Skyhawks with 19 digs.
Junior setter Emily Iverson (Elmhurt, Ill./York) dished out a match-high 56 assists, and sophomore Kelsey Weymouth (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) hit .286 with 11 digs, nine kills, two assists, two aces, and two blocks. Junior middle blocker Mary-Kate Catton (San Diego, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) did a nice job defensively, leading all players with four blocks, while also adding nine kills on the offensive end.
Merrimack's three-time NE-10 Player of the Week, Stephanie Sheehan (Smithtown, N.Y./St. Anthony's), was held in check with just 10 kills and seven digs. Entering tonight's contest, Sheehan was averaging an NE-10-leading 3.97 kills per set, along with 2.73 digs per frame.
Freshman Tara Stuhr (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach), the reigning NE-10 Setter of the Week, led the Warriors with a .429 hitting percentage and 35 assists, and senior outside hitter Jackie Jones (Amherst, N.H./Wheaton College) added 11 kills, eight digs, three aces, and two blocks.
After dropping the opening frame by a 26-24 margin, Stonehill regained the momentum in the second set, as the Skyhawks hit .333 and won by nine points. Merrimack was able to make the third and fourth frames more interesting, but Stonehill left North Andover with a critical conference road victory. Merrimack had been 7-2 on its home floor entering tonight's action.
Stonehill (14-10, 6-2 NE-10) returns to action on Friday night at the University of New Haven, which has not lost a Northeast-10 contest since joining the league in 2008. The Chargers have gone a perfect 82-0 in conference play since '08, and are in the midst of their sixth consecutive season without a league defeat. Merrimack (10-12, 5-4 NE-10) will hit the road this weekend as well, as the Chargers are set to take on Mercy College and the New York Institute of Technology on Saturday.
