Stonehill Rebounds With 3-2 Win Over Georgia College


Sophomore Delia Phillips recorded a double-double today with 14 kills and 11 digs in Stonehill's 3-2 win.

Skyhawks top Bobcats in tight, five set contest

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (October 12, 2013) – The Stonehill College volleyball team bounced back from two tough defeats yesterday with a 3-2 (25-17, 14-25, 25-21, 18-25, 15-9) win over Georgia College today at Rubin Arena in its final match at the Palm Beach Atlantic Pepsi Bash at the Beach tournament.

Freshman setter Taylor Stevens (Foster, R.I./Ponaganset) continued her strong play this week, leading Stonehill with a .571 hitting percentage and 44 assists, while also tallying 12 digs, four kills, an ace and a block. Senior captain Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover) and sophomore Delia Phillips (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) each registered 14 kills, and Phillips also notched 11 digs for a double-double.

Senior captain Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) paced Stonehill with 18 digs, and junior Meaghan Lee (Hanover, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) recorded 11 kills with a match-high four blocks.

Georgia College was led by freshmen Rachel Rice (Johns Creek, Ga./Northview), who racked up 22 kills, 13 digs, and three blocks while hitting .426, and Caroline Long (Roswell, Ga./Fellowship Christian) who recorded 11 kills, three digs, and one block for the Bobcats.

The two squads alternated sets won, with Stonehill winning the first, third, and fifth, and Georgia College taking the second and fourth frames. The Bobcats and Skyhawks were about as evenly matched as it gets, with Stonehill hitting .224 as a team and Georgia College checking in at .222.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Arvidson was named to the 2013 Pepsi Bash at the Beach All-Tournament team, along with Rice, Christina Alessi (West Palm Beach, Fla./The King's Academy) and Melissa Buckingham (Southlake, Texas) of Palm Beach Atlantic University, Kristin Koch (Niceville, Fla./Niceville) of Georgia Regents University, and Caleen Hawkins (Columbia, S.C./Blythewood) of Claflin University.

Stonehill (12-7, 4-1 NE-10) is off until Friday, when the Skyhawks host the first of two matches on Alumni & Family Weekend. Stonehill will welcome Franklin Pierce University to Merkert Gym on Friday, October 18th, and LIU Post on Saturday afternoon. Georgia College (4-15, 1-8 Peach Belt) returns to action Tuesday night against Georgia Regents in Peach Belt action.
