Stonehill Sweeps Saint Anselm, 3-0

Skyhawks win fourth straight match, have now won six of last seven

EASTON, Mass. (September 24, 2013) – The Stonehill College volleyball team took care of business in the 2013 Purple & White Game, sweeping Northeast-10 rival Saint Anselm College, 3-0, by scores of 25-16, 25-17, and 25-19 tonight at Merkert Gym.

Junior Mary-Kate Catton (San Diego, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) and sophomore Delia Phillips (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) each tallied a team-high nine kills, and junior setter Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) racked up 24 assists to lead Stonehill to a convincing victory.

The Skyhawks were in complete control in the first two sets, hitting .484 in the opening frame, and topping that with a .500 hitting percentage in the second set. Stonehill hit only .171 in the final stanza, but still finished off the Hawks, who hit .065 in the third set and .133 overall.

Senior Captain Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) chipped in with eight kills and eight digs, while also hitting a match-best .571. Maxey was one of four Skyhawks to hit at least .400 tonight, the others being Catton, Phillips, and junior Meaghan Lee (Hanover, Mass./Notre Dame Academy).

Saint Anselm was led offensively by freshman Brennah Gladwill (Citrus Heights, Calif./Oakmont), who had a match-high 13 kills to go with four digs. Setter Natalie Steinwart (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Central Catholic) also had a match-high with 27 assists.

The Skyhawks will next be in action this weekend, when they take their four-match winning streak on the road to New York. Stonehill (8-4, 2-1 NE-10) will take on Dominican College on Friday night, and then the New York Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon. Saint Anselm (4-7, 0-1 NE-10), which has now lost five straight matches and twelve consecutive sets, will look to get back on track with a match next Tuesday at Southern New Hampshire University.
