LIU Post Defeats Stonehill at Charger Invitational, 3-0


Senior captain Sydney Maxey posted a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs tonight against LIU Post.

Pioneers sweep Skyhawks 25-18, 25-22, 25-23

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (September 6, 2013) – The Stonehill College volleyball team fell in their opening game of the 2013 season today, losing in three sets to LIU Post, 25-18, 25-22, 25-23 at the Charger Invitational, hosted by the University of New Haven.

LIU Post had two players with double-digit kills, and two with double-digit digs. Heather Adams (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) finished with 12 kills, and Rachel Ringor (Honolulu, Hawaii/Roosevelt) contributed 15 digs. Lulu Centro (Rome, Italy/Liceo Linguistico Lucrezio Caro) had a match-high 38 assists to go along with six digs.

Senior captain Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) led the way for the Stonehill, contributing a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs, while senior Jessica Frankowski (Unionville, Conn./Farmington) had a match-high 17 digs. Freshman Taylor Stevens (Foster, R.I./Ponaganset) engineered the offense with 29 assists and seven digs in her collegiate debut.

Stonehill fell behind early in the first set, 9-3, and was never able to recover. The Skyhawks never led in the second set, but at one point trailed 22-21 before losing 25-22. In the final set, Stonehill held an 18-12 advantage after a kill by senior captain Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover). After a timeout by LIU Post, the Pioneers went on an 8-3 run before winning the set and finishing off the sweep.

Stonehill (0-1) is back in action tomorrow for two more matches as part of the Charger Invitational. The Skyhawks will take on Wilmington (Del.) University at 10 a.m., and then host New Haven at 1 p.m. LIU Post (1-0) will also play two matches tomorrow, the first against New Haven at 10 a.m. and the second against Wilmington at 1 p.m.
