Panthers push winning streak to ten matches, advance to second round
WEST HAVEN, Conn. (November 17, 2011) – Fifth-seeded Stonehill College, making its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Tournament, dropped a 3-1 decision to fourth-seeded Adelphi University by scores of 25-21, 15-25, 25-27 and 15-25 in first round action on Thursday night at Charger Gymnasium.
Adelphi (23-7, 12-3 NE-10) advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament Division II East Region for the second-straight season where it will face first-seeded New Haven at 7:30 p.m. Stonehill, who tied the program record for most wins in a single-season (27-8, 1996), has its season come to an end at 27-7 overall and 14-1 in NE-10 play.
Junior outside hitter Chelsea Overholt (Centrevilla, Va./Flint Hill School) notched a double-double to lead the Panthers compiling 14 kills and 11 digs. Senior libero Bianca Hernandez (East Moriches, N.Y./Westhampton Beach) notched a match-high 25 digs while sophomore setter Katie Bryson (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) dished out a match-high 45 assists to go along with five kills and six digs. Freshman middle blocker Kaitlyn DeStefano (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) added 11 kills and three block assists.

For Stonehill, senior Laura Huselton (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) and sophomore Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) both fell one kill shy of a double-double tallying nine kills and 10 digs. Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) facilitated the offense with 39 assists, 14 digs, two kills and one block assist while classmate Meaghan Lee (Hanover, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) had nine kills and three block assists. Junior libero Erin Kelly (Tinley Park, Ill./Marist) tied Iverson for the team-lead in digs with 14 on the night.
After exchanging the first two sets of the match, Stonehill and Adelphi rendered four lead changes and nine tied scores in the third set. Trailing 24-22, the Skyhawks rallied to tie the score at 24-24 capped by a kill from sophomore right-side hitter Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover), who finished with nine in the contest. An attacking error quickly gave the Panthers a 25-24 lead but Huselton hammered home her third kill of the set to keep Stonehill alive. The Skyhawks rally fell short as Adelphi responded immediately with kills by Overholt and a tip from Bryson just inside the right sideline to claim a 27-25 victory in set three.
In set four, DeStefano and Overholt combined for nine kills while the Panthers hit .538 as a team to close out the match handing Stonehill its first loss in a four-set match this season (9-1). The Panthers also halted the Skyhawks 15-match home winning streak with a 3-0 win in the NE-10 Tournament semifinal round.
The Panthers turned in a .247 hitting percentage, 56 kills, 76 digs and eight blocks while Stonehill hit .093, had 43 kills, 61 digs and six blocks.
