Skyhawks Make Quick Work Of Assumption, 3-0

Stonehill runs winning streak to four-straight matches

WORCESTER, Mass. (October 18, 2011) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team dispatched Assumption College in three-straight sets, 3-0, by scores of 26-24, 25-15 and 25-18 in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action on Tuesday night at Laska Gymnasium.

Freshman middle blocker Mary-Kate Catton (San Diego, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) and senior outside hitter Laura Huselton (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) tied for the match-high in kills with 11 each to pace the offense. Huselton also added one service ace, six digs and one block assist while Catton posted an impressive .786 hitting percentage (11-0-14).

NE-10 Setter and Rookie of the Week Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) distributed a match-high 34 assists to go along with one kill, two service aces and seven digs. Sophomore Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover) contributed nine kills. Classmate Rachel Sperando (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) added seven kills, one assist, two service aces and nine digs.

For Assumption (6-17, 1-10 NE-10), sophomores Ryan Merle (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) and Mary Johnston (Pearland, Texas/Glenda Dawson) led the Greyhounds offensively with eight kills apiece.

Kristin Flatekval (Mahwah, N.J./Immaculate Heart) compiled seven kills, a team-leading 26 assists and six digs. Jess Reimers (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) led all players in digs with 19.

Trailing 22-20 in set one, Stonehill used a 6-2 run highlighted by three kills – all from different players – and one of Mary Nelson's (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding) service aces in the contest.

Catton and Huselton powered the Skyhawks in set two combining for 10 kills total. Set two also featured Stonehill's best offensive attack of the night with 17 kills, one attacking error and a .571 hitting percentage.

In the third set, the Skyhawks raced out to an 18-12 lead and never looked back. Catton and Sperando led all players in kills (four each) in the set with Sperando putting down the final two points to secure the victory.

Stonehill (21-3, 9-0 NE-10) hosts Adelphi University on Friday, October 21 at 7 p.m. and Pace University on Saturday, October 22 at 1 p.m. on Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend.

Fans are encouraged to wear pink to both matches in recognition of the event. The Skyhawks goal is to raise $500 dollars over the weekend to help the fight against breast cancer. Fans can contribute a flat donation or can enter a raffle to win mini-pink Molten volleyballs signed by the team.
