Stonehill Splits At Southern New Hampshire Tri-Match

Skyhawks win opener against Penmen, drop match two versus Dowling

MANCHESTER, N.H. (October 8, 2011) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon at Southern New Hampshire University. The Skyhawks notched a 3-1 victory over the host Penmen in match one by scores of 25-17, 25-23, 20-25, 25-21 and fell to Dowling, 3-2, by scores of 21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 18-25 and 10-15 in match two.

Senior outside hitter Laura Huselton (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) and sophomore Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) led the Skyhawks offensively as both players tied for the match-high in kills with 13 apiece. Maxey also added 12 digs for her 10th double-double of the season while Huselton tallied three service aces, seven digs and two block assists.

Sophomore right-side hitter Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover) chipped in with 10 kills and two block assists. Freshman setter Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) facilitated Stonehill's offense with 49 assists, three kills, eight digs and one block assist. Sophomore defensive specialist Jessica Frankowski (Unionville, Conn./Farmington) led all players in digs with 16 total.

For Southern New Hampshire (4-8, 2-4 NE-10), junior Erica Solomon (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) paced the offense with a team-high 12 kills and 12 digs. Megan Lesczynski (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) added 11 kills and 11 digs while Danielle Coffey (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) had 10 kills. Freshman setter Kendra Mikuta (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) dished out 35 assists.

Dowling 3, Stonehill 2

Junior outside hitter Bethany Shepard (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain HS) guided the Golden Lions (14-3 overall) to their five set victory tallying 31 kills for a .491 hitting percentage along with 10 digs, two assists and one block solo. Maja Potpara (Pljevlja, Montenegro / Niko-Rolovic) orchestrated the offense with a match-high 60 assists.

Dowling had three other players reach double-digits in kills as freshman Cassy Kelly (Fraser, Mich./Fraser) had 15, classmate Dragana Jelovac (Kotor, Montenegro/Mladost) notched 13 and senior Chelsea Callahan (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) chipped in with 11 kills and a match-leading 19 digs.

For Stonehill, Maxey and Huselton both compiled double-doubles with Maxey posting a team-high 18 kills and 13 digs and Huselton adding 15 kills and 17 digs. Arvidson also reached double-figures in match two with 13 kills while freshman middle-blocker Meaghan Lee (Hanover, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) had 14 kills.

Iverson contributed 56 assists, three kills and nine digs while Frankowski added 18 digs.

Stonehill (17-3, 5-0 NE-10) returns to action on Tuesday, October 11 – at home on Purple-Out Merkert Gym night – at 7 p.m. against American International College.
