Maxey's 18 kills power Skyhawks past Warriors
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (October 4, 2011) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team pushed its winning streak to five-straight matches with a 3-0 victory over Merrimack College in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action on Tuesday night at the Volpe Gym.
With the win, the Skyhawks (16-2, 4-0 NE-10) have matched their win total from all of last season (16-13 overall) with 13 matches remaining on the regular season schedule. The Warriors fall to 3-13 overall and 0-4 in the NE-10.
Sophomore outside hitter Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) paced Stonehill offensively with a match-high 18 kills (.424 hitting percentage), one assist, one service ace and seven digs.
Classmate Vivian Fitzgerald (Winfield, Ill./Aurora Central Catholic) added nine kills while freshman setter Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) compiled her sixth double-double this season with 38 assists and 14 digs. Junior libero Erin Kelly (Tinley Park, Ill./Marist) also chipped in with 14 digs tying Iverson for the match-high.
For Merrimack, junior Jenna Reilly (Northport, N.Y./Northport) led the Warriors in kills with 10 to go along with four digs and three blocks (one solo). Senior Nicole Duarte (Windham, N.H./Salem) contributed seven kills and three blocks (two solo) while teammate Brianna Trabucco (Canton, Mass./Canton) facilitated the offense with 26 assists and seven digs.
Stonehill returns to action on Saturday, October 8 in a tri-match hosted by Southern New Hampshire University. The Skyhawks will take on the Penmen in a NE-10 contest at 1 p.m. and Dowling College in non-conference play at 3 p.m. Merrimack hosts Southern Connecticut State in a NE-10 matchup scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 6.
