Lyons Leads Skyhawks, Women’s Track & Field Wraps Up New England’s

Lyons finishes seventh in shot put for a season best

ROXBURY, Massachusetts (February 1, 2020) – The Stonehill College women's track & field team wrapped up the New England Championships on Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Track Center totaling two individual All-New England honors and one relay team accolade.   

Highlights:

  • Senior Shayla Lyons was the only Skyhawk to earn All-New England honors on day two of the New England Championship. She finished seventh out of 24 in the shot put as she threw a distance of 42 feet, 7.50 inches, for a season best. Classmate Elizabeth Balzarini took home 16th in the event with a season best mark of 39 feet, 8.50 inches.
  • Both senior Zoe Smith and sophomore Savanna Macaluso qualified for the semifinal round of the 60-meter hurdles. Smith ran a time of 9.01-seconds for a 12th-place finish, while Macaluso placed 16th overall with a time of 9.24-seconds.
  • Seniors Anna Lastra and Alyssa Freeman both competed in the mile run, as Freeman clocked in a time of 5:08.64 finishing 12th. Lastra followed her with a time of 5:10.66 running against 31 competitors.
  • The 4x400-meter relay team ran the event in 4:05.15, taking home 18th out of 22 events. The team comprised of Casey Gannon who opened the race with an unofficial time of 1:01.5, followed by Ashley Colarusso who ran 400 meters in an unofficial time of 59.9-seconds. Sinead O'Brien was the third leg with an unofficial time of 1:01.7, and Claire Hurtado was the anchor leg running an unofficial time of 1:01.9.
  • The 4x800-meter relay team finished 12th out of 17 teams, clocking in a time of 9:33.85. The team was composed of Freeman, Claire Mason, Jillian Callahan, and Jillian Howard. Freeman kicked off the relay with an unofficial time of 2:22.8, followed by Mason who ran the 800 meters in an unofficial time of 2:23.2. Callahan was third with an unofficial time of 2:23.9, as Howard was the anchor leg in the relay running an unofficial time of 2:23.9.

Stonehill competes in two more meets before the NE10 Championships, as they will continue the season next weekend at the URI Coaches Tribute on Saturday, February 8, hosted by the University of Rhode Island at the Mackal Fieldhouse.
