Women’s Track and Field Places Eighth at Beantown Challenge

Four Skyhawks qualify for New Englands

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (January 13, 2018) – The Stonehill women's track and field team finished eighth at the Beantown Challenge, hosted by Harvard University at the Gordon Indoor Track on Saturday totaling 27.5 points.

Four women Skyhawks qualified for New Englands at the meet including Kelly Higgins, Emily Knox, Alison Tobin, and Olivia Dexter. Dexter previously qualified for New Englands but hit the mark again with her time in the 60-meter dash, ranking 12th overall. Higgins is currently ranked 31st with her time in the 1000-meter run, while Knox is 17th in the 3000-meter run, and Tobin 12th in the pole vault. Currently the 4x800-meter relay is also ranked 11th overall with their time from this weekend's meet.

Northeastern led the way with 117 points, while Harvard totaled 98 points for second and Boston College tallied 75 points for third.


Higgins qualified for her first-career New England Championship in the 1000-meter run

Senior Emily Knox (Worcester, Massachusetts/Notre Dame Academy) led the Skyhawks with her first-place finish in the 3000-meter run, topping all Division I competition with a time of 10:02.10, qualifying her for the New England Championships. Junior Makenzie Cyr (Douglas, Massachusetts/Douglas) was next in line with a sixth-place finish and a time of 10:23.32. Classmates Isabel Baker (Charlestown, Rhode Island/Chariho) and Jackie Cutillo (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan) finished back-to-back with 12th and 13th place, with times of 10:53.35 and 10:53.41, respectively.

Sophomore Anna Lastra (Bridgton, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) was the first Skyhawk across the finish line in the mile with a time of 5:10.22 placing sixth. Junior Elizabeth Hannon (Franklin, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan) was the next Purple and White across the line taking 10th with a time of 5:16.12. Sophomore Alyssa Freeman (Billerica, Massachusetts/Billerica Memorial) and junior Jillian Caiazzi (Marlborough, Massachusetts/Marlborough) took 13th with a time of 5:19.07 and 14th with a mark of 5:19.19, respectively.

Sophomore Kelly Higgins (Weymouth, Massachusetts/Weymouth) competed in the 1000-meter run recording a time of 3:02.39, placing 12th out of 28 competitors qualifying for the New England Championships.

Junior Olivia Dexter (East Calais, Vermont/Union 32) crossed the finish line fifth with a time of 7.85 in the 60-meter dash. Senior Emily Polvere (Somers, New York/Somers) finished 25th in the 60-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 8.26.

Dexter also competed in the 200-meter sprint, finishing with a time of 25.74, good for seventh. Polvere took home 21st with a time of 26.70, while freshman Casey Gannon (Warwick, Rhode Island/Toll Gate) placed 27th with a time of 27.02.

Shayla Lyons (Westerlo, New York/Bishop Maginn/Berne-Knox Westerlo) and Gaelin Farrell (Baldwinville, Massachusetts/Narragansett Regional) finished ninth and 10th, respectively in the shot put, tossing it a distance of 39 feet, eight inches, and 39 feet, and 3.75 inches, respectively. Elizabeth Balzarini (Dedham, Massachusetts/Dedham) finished 18th in the shot put with a toss of 34 feet, 3.5 inches.

In the weight throw. Jesica Litwa (Seymour, Massachusetts/Seymour) took 10th with a toss of 48 feet, 1.75 inches after finishing third in the first flight. Julianne Holbrook (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) placed seventh at the end of flight, and then ended the day with an 18th-place finish with a throw of 42 feet, 9.5 inches.


Dexter hit the New England standard again in the 60-meter dash

Junior Krista Fernandes (Taunton, Massachusetts/Coyle and Cassidy) led the Skyhawks in the 500-meter sprint with a time of 1:20.09, good for 15th of 27 competitors, while freshman Fiona Jordan (Norwood, Massachusetts/Norwood) took home 19th and sophomore Claire Hurtado (Newington, Connecticut/Northwest Catholic) finished 25th. Jordan clocked in at 1:21.58, as Hurtado crossed the finish with a time of 1:23.82.

Alison Tobin (Hudson, Massachusetts/Hudson) took home seventh with a distance of 17 feet, 6.25 inches in the long jump. Tobin also competed in the pole vault event and took seventh with a mark of 11 feet and 1.75 inches qualifying for the New England Championships. Tobin also competed in the 200-meter dash clocking in at 27.51, as sophomore Ashley Colarusso (Tewksbury, Massachusetts/Tewksbury Memorial) finished 39th with a time of 28.17.

Junior Courtney Daggett (Attleboro, Massachusetts/Attleboro) placed eighth in the high jump with a height of five feet, three inches, as freshman Kathleen Giusti (Merrimac, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) finished 10th with a mark of five feet, one inch. Junior Ashley Daggett (Attleboro, Massachusetts/Attleboro) and sophomore Zoe Smith (Rochester, Massachusetts/Old Rochester) also hit a height of five feet, one inch for 10th place.

Colarusso followed Tobin with an eighth-place mark in pole vault reaching a height of 10 feet, eight inches. Freshman Alexandra Sexton (Los Gatos, California/Los Gatos) placed 11th with a height of 10 feet, two inches.

The 4x800-meter relay consisting of Caiazzi, Hannon, Higgins and Lastra placed seventh out of 10 teams clocking in at 9:43.27.

The Skyhawks will return to action next Saturday, January 20 at the URI Sorlein Invitational hosted by the University of Rhode Island in the Mackal Fieldhouse in Kingston, Rhode Island.
