Women’s Track and Field Opens Indoor Season at UMass Boston Invitational

Dexter was one of two Skyhawks to qualify for New Englands


Fernandes competed in two events in the first meet of the season, assisting the Skyhawks to a second-place 4x400-meter relay

ROXBURY, Mass. (December 2, 2017) – The Stonehill women's track and field season opened on Saturday, December 2 with the Sixth Annual UMass Boston Indoor Open at the Reggie Lewis Center, hosted by UMass Boston.

Stonehill saw three first-place marks throughout the day, while they also tallied sixth second-place finishes in the first meet of the indoor season. Senior Alison Tobin (Hudson, Massachusetts/Hudson) and junior Olivia Dexter (East Calais, Vermont/Union 32) qualified for New Englands in pole vault and 60-meter dash, respectively.

Junior Isabel Baker (Charlestown, Rhode Island/Chariho) led the Skyhawks with a first-place finish in the 5000-meter event with a time of 18:44.22, while Jackie Cutillo (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan) followed in second with a time of 18:45.80. Sophomore Jordan Callahan (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) placed fourth with a time of 19:18.43, as junior Taylor Landers (North Andover, Massachusetts/Pingree School) finished ninth with a time of 19:48.56.

Junior Ashley Daggett (Attleboro, Massachusetts/Attleboro) also took home her first title of the season with a mark of 1.60m in the high jump, while Madison Ward (Holliston, Massachusetts/Holliston) followed her with the same height. Courtney Daggett (Attleboro, Massachusetts/Attleboro) placed fourth, while freshman Kathleen Giusti (Merrimac, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) finished right behind with the same mark of 1.55m. Ward also was the only Skyhawk in the triple jump, as she took home fifth with a mark of 10.41m.

The 4x400-meter relay, consisting of Ashley Colarusso (Tewksbury, Massachusetts/Tewksbury Memorial), Anna DeVitto (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke), Krista Fernandes (Taunton, Massachusetts/Coyle and Cassidy), and Casey Gannon (Warwick, Rhode Island/Toll Gate) took home second place behind host UMass Boston with a time of 4:10.11.

The Skyhawks took home first, second and third in the pole vault, as Tobin led the way with a mark of 3.50m. This mark qualified Tobin for the New England Championships. Colarusso followed with a height of 3.20m and Alexandra Sexton (Los Gatos, California/Los Gatos) with 3.05m as she competed in her first collegiate meet.

Dexter finished second in 60-meter dash with time of 7.92, qualifying for New Englands, while she also placed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 5.11m. Senior Emily Polvere (Somers, New York/Somers) also competed in the 60-meter dash clocking in with time of 8.09, good for fifth. Dexter and Polvere crossed the finish line in second and third in heat one to put them through to finals. Polvere also ran in the 200-meter event taking home fifth with a time of 26.37.

Fiona Jordan (Norwood, Massachusetts/Norwood) clocked in at 1:00.34, good for third in her first-collegiate meet, while Fernandes finished fifth with a time of 1:00.58 in 400-meter dash

Sophomore Shayla Lyons (Westerlo, New York/Bishop Maginn/Berne-Knox Westerlo) threw a distance of 12.20m in the shot put, taking home third in the first meet of the year, while senior Gaelin Farrell (Baldwinville, Massachusetts/Narragansett Regional) hit a mark of 12.15m.

Claire Hurtado (Newington, Connecticut/Northwest Catholic) finished third in 800-meters with time of 2:34.46, while DeVitto took home seventh with time of 2:35.41.

Kelly Higgins (Weymouth, Massachusetts/Weymouth) finished second in mile with 5:20.61, while Elizabeth Hannon (Franklin, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan) crossed the finish line eighth with a time of 5:34.55.

In the 60-meter hurdles, Azariah Boyd (Brockton, Massachusetts/Brockton) placed third with a time of 9.47, as Zoe Smith (Rochester, Massachusetts/Old Rochester Regional) and Gannon finished fifth and seventh, respectively. Smith clocked in at 9.62 and Gannon crossed the finish with a time of 9.76 in her first collegiate race.

Other results:

Jenna Raffael (North Reading, Massachusetts/North Reading) just fell short of finals in her first collegiate race with a time of 9.97 in the 60-meter hurdles, while Colleen Perry (Weymouth, Massachusetts/Weymouth) finished 30th with a time of 11.22.

Smith also competed in the high jump, placing ninth with a mark of 1.50m, while junior Perry reached a height of 1.45m.

Sophomore Elizabeth Balzarini (Dedham, Massachusetts/Dedham) earned ninth place in the shot put with a distance of 10.90m.

Classmate Jesica Litwa (Seymour, Massachusetts/Seymour) finished seventh in the weight throw with a mark of 13.14m, while senior Julianne Holbrook (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) took home 10th with a distance of 12.79m.

Boyd clocked in at 27.06 in 200-meter dash, good for 11th place.

The Skyhawks will return to action after winter break with the Beantown Challenge on Saturday, January 13, hosted by Harvard University at the Gordon Indoor Track in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
