Women’s Track and Field Finishes Fifth at Tufts Snowflake Classic

The Skyhawks saw four student-athletes claim runner-up marks

MEDFORD, Mass. (April 2, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's track & field team finished fifth overall at the Tufts Snowflake Classic on Sunday, April 2 hosted by Tufts University.

Boston University finished first with 119 points, while Tufts took second with 116 points and Southern New Hampshire University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute rounded out the top three with 67 points, each. Stonehill came in fifth with 64.50 points.

Stonehill earned four runner-up marks at the meet.

Sinead O'Brien (Norwood, Massachusetts/Norwood) placed second in the preliminairies of the 100-meter dash with a personal best time of 13.26, while she finished fourth with a time of 13.33.

Ashley Daggett (Attleboro, Massachusetts/Attleboro) finished second, while Courtney Daggett (Attleboro, Massachusetts/Attleboro) also placed second in the high jump with matching marks of 1.58m (5 feet, 2.25 inch). Ashley marked a personal best at the meet.1

Cutillo

Krista Fernandes (Taunton, Massachusetts/Coyle and Cassidy) clocked in at a personal best of 26.56 in the 200-meter dash earning the Skyhawks eight points in second place. Fernandes also finished second in the 400-meter sprint behind first-place Boston University runner Cynthia Aroke. Fernandes clocked in at sub-minute, 59.05, a new personal best.

Shayla Lyons (Westerlo, New York/Bishop Maginn/Berne-Knox Westerlo) competed in her first collegiate outdoor competition and finished second in the shot put with a personal best mark of 12.46m (40 feet, 10.50 inch.). Gaelin Farrell (Baldwinville, Massachusetts/Narragansett Regional) also earned the Skyhawks points, as she placed fourth with a distance of 12.14m (39 feet, 10.00 inch) in the shot put.

Lyons also competed in the discus throw where she also placed in the top 10, earning seventh with a mark of 36.11m (118 feet, 6inch.)

Freshman Zoe Smith (Rochester, Massachusetts/Old Rochester Regional) and junior Azariah Boyd (Brockton, Massachusetts/Brockton) slid in the top 10 in the 100-meter hurdles earning eighth and 10th, respectively, in preliminairies. Smith finished fifth in the finals with a time of 16.20, just a few seconds above her qualifying run of 16.16. Boyd clocked in at 16.50.

Freshman Ashley Colarusso (Tewksbury, Massachusetts/Tewksbury Memorial) finished in the top five with a personal best mark of 3.10m (10 feet, 2.00 inch) in the pole vault event taking fourth out of 13 competitors.

Six Skyhawks finished in the top 40 of 76 1500-meter runners, including Danika Wayss (Warwick, Rhode Island) with a time of 5:00.75 earning 21st. Jordan Callahan (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) followed her in 22nd place with 5:01.88 and Alyssa Freeman (Billerica, Massachusetts/Billerica Memorial) was immediately behind Jordan with a time of 5:01.90 in 23rd.

Madison Ward (Holliston, Massachusetts/Holliston) earned the Skyhawks four points with her fifth-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 5.04m (16 feet, 6.50 inch).

Anna DeVitto (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) and Jacqueline Cutillo (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan) placed 28th and 29th, respectively, with times of a personal best 5:04.18 and 5:05.52, respectively. Julie Schultz (Billerica, Massachusetts/Billerica) was the final Skyhawk to cross the finish in the 1500m with a time of 5:13.94, placing 37th.

Freshman Jesica Litwa (Seymour, Massachusetts/Seymour) earned the Skyhawks two points as she placed eighth in the hammer throw with a distance of 37.87m (124 feet, 3inch).

Stonehill will travel to Springfield, Massachusetts for the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Saturday, April 8 with a 10:00 a.m. start time, hosted by American International College.

Other performances:

Boyd finished 24th out of 87 200-meter runners with a time of 28.04, while Colarusso placed 38th crossing the finish in 28.53. Colleen Perry (Weymouth, Massachusetts/Weymouth) was close behind finishing 47th with a time of 28.79.

Perry also finished 20th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.37. She also placed in the top 10 in the long jump with a distance of 4.63m (15 feet, 2.25 inch).

Ward placed eighth in the high jump with a mark of 1.53m (5 feet, .25 inch), as Smith tied for 10th with the same mark and Alyssa Vieira (Taunton, Massachusetts/Coyle and Cassidy) finished 14th with a height of 1.48m (4 feet, 10.25 inch).

Vieira tied for 15th in the long jump with a mark of 4.54m (14 feet, 10.75 inch.)

Megan Bobinski (Torrington, Connecticut/Holy Cross) took 16th out of 69 800-meter runners with a time of 2:27.68, as Claire Hurtado (Newington, Connecticut/Northwest Catholic) fell eight seconds behind Bobinski with a time of 2:35.89.

Olivia Libby (Dayton, Maine/Thorton Academy) placed 15th in the 400-meter hurdles crossing the finish with a time of 1:16. 87.

Elizabeth Balzarini (Dedham, Massachusetts/Dedham) took 13th in the shot put with a mark of 10.20m (33 feet, 5.75 inch).

Litwa placed in the top 20 with a mark of 31.28m (102 feet, 7 inch) earning 13th out of 40 throwers, while Balzarini took 17th with a throw of 30.73m (100 feet, 10inch).

Julianne Holbrook (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) finished 14th in the hammer throw out of 30 throwers with a mark of 33.97m (111 feet, 5 inch.).
