Solorzano Valencia Earns Second NE10 Rookie of the Week Award

EASTON, Mass. (October 15, 2019) – Stonehill College freshman Cristina Solorzano Valencia has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week for women's tennis for the second time this fall, the league office announced today.

Solorzano Valencia posted a combined 4-0 record in singles and doubles play in a 1-1 week for Stonehill, winning both of her matches at No. 1 singles and also teamed up with senior Annelise Howick for a pair of wins at No. 2 doubles. Solorzano Valencia was a double-winner against University of District of Columbia, ranked No. 6 in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Region rankings, on Friday, starting with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles with Howick. She followed that up by earning the Skyhawks first point of the match by knocking off Simone Parn, ranked No. 6 in the Oracle/ITA East Region singles rankings, 6-4, 6-2.

Solorzano also earned two points in Saturday's 5-2 win at Franklin Pierce, combining for a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles to clinch the doubles point for Stonehill. She then added a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 comeback win at No. 1 singles against Franklin Pierce postgrad Himani Mor that clinched the match win for the Skyhawks. Solorzano Valencia also collected NE10 Rookie of the Week honors on September 17 after her outstanding opening two weeks to her collegiate career.

Solorzano Valencia is a combined 25-6 in singles and doubles play in her first collegiate season. She has posted a 12-3 singles record, including 8-2 in the NE10, going 6-1 at the No. 1 flight and 3-1 at No. 2. Solorzano Valencia has also posted a 13-3 doubles record, including 8-2 in the NE10, teaming up with Howick for a 12-2 record, including 7-1 in the NE10. Solorzano Valencia and Howick also reached the semifinal round of the USTA/ITA East Regional in September, while she also advanced to the singles quarterfinals.

Stonehill (9-2, 9-1 NE10), ranked No. 4 in the most recent Oracle/ITA Division II East Region rankings, captured a share of its fourth-straight NE10 regular season championship on Monday, marking its tenth regular season title overall. The Skyhawks host Division I Bryant University on Sunday for a Senior Day match at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at noon. Stonehill will then turn its focus to the NE10 Tournament starting Wednesday, October 23.
