Skyhawks capture share of fourth-straight NE10 regular season championship with dominant effort behind five double-winners
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (October 14, 2019) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 4 in the most recent Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Region rankings, wrapped up a share of its fourth-straight Northeast-10 Conference Regular Season Championship with a dominant 7-0 triumph over Le Moyne College, ranked No. 10 in the region, at Skytop Tennis Courts on the campus of Syracuse University this afternoon.
Stonehill (9-2, 9-1 NE10) has now won at least a share of four-straight NE10 regular season championships, having won 33 of its last 34 matches in regular season Conference play dating back to 2016. The Skyhawks have now won ten NE10 regular season titles all-time and await the final tournament seedings as they look to claim a second-straight tournament championship next week.
Junior Isabelle Porter and freshman Cristina Solorzano Valencia led five double-winners on the afternoon for Stonehill. Solorzano Valencia and senior Annelise Howick teamed up to clinch the doubles point for the Skyhawks with their 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Solorzano Valencia then added a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 1 singles against Le Moyne sophomore Birdem Oz.
Porter and sophomore Samantha Ormesher combined for a 7-5 victory at No. 1 doubles for Stonehill. Porter, ranked No. 13 in the latest Oracle/ITA Division II East Region singles rankings, added a 6-1, 6-3 decision over junior Marta Nunez at No. 2 singles for the Skyhawks, while Ormesher battled past freshman Marta Perez 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.
Senior Caroline Ray and sophomore Emma Markaryan rounded out Stonehill's double-winners in the match, starting with their 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles. Ray then provided the match-clinching fourth point for the Skyhawks with her 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles against Le Moyne sophomore Brooke Fernandez. Markaryan added a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles for the Skyhawks against junior Rebecca Peters. Freshman Steffi Antao dropped just one game in her straight sets win for Stonehill at No. 3 singles.
Stonehill (9-2, 9-1 NE10) returns to the courts on Sunday, October 20, when it hosts Bryant University for Senior Day at noon. Le Moyne College (10-3, 7-3 NE10) visits Roberts Wesleyan College for an NE10 Tournament tune-up on Sunday.
