Women's Tennis Fights Past Adelphi, 4-3

Vo delivers Skyhawks 29th-straight NE10 regular season win with three-set battle


Vo battled back from a set down to provide the match clinching point at #3 singles today

EASTON, Mass. (September 29, 2019) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 4 in the most recent Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, battled its way to a 4-3 triumph over Adelphi University, ranked No. 9 in the region, in a key Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis match at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Senior Alexandra Vo, ranked No. 15 in the Oracle/ITA Division II East Region singles rankings, battled back from a set down to clinch Stonehill's 29th-straight NE10 regular season win. She was down 4-5 in the second set to Adelphi freshman Amanda Franstedt after dropping the first, 4-6, before rallying to force a tiebreaker in the second. She took the breaker, 7-2, and then rolled 6-1 in the third to improve to 37-0 for her career in NE10 singles matches.

Freshman Steffi Antao was a double-winner to lead Stonehill on the afternoon. She teamed up with senior Caroline Ray for a 6-0 sweep at No. 3 doubles. Antao then pulled the Skyhawks within a point of the win with her victory over senior Nicole Stay at No. 4 singles. Sophomore Emma Markaryan also clinched a doubles point for Stonehill with her 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles against Adelphi sophomore Lea Baschanow.

Junior Isabelle Porter and sophomore Samantha Ormesher claimed a key 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles for Stonehill that clinched the doubles point for the Skyhawks, fighting off Adelphi junior Nicole Kielan and sophomore Barbara Quagliardi, who had rallied from 0-3 down to know the match three all, before the Skyhawks duo put the match away.

Quagliardi, Kielan and her younger sister, Julia Kielan, all posted singles wins for Adelphi. Quagliardi earned the first singles point when Porter retired while trailing 5-4 in the first set, before the Kielans pulled the match even with wins at No. 2 and No. 6 singles respectively, leaving Vo and Franstedt as the final match on the courts. Franstedt and Stay also picked up a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles for the Panthers.

Stonehill (5-0, 5-0 NE10) is right back on the courts on Tuesday, when it hosts Saint Anselm College for an NE10 dual match at 3 p.m. Adelphi (5-2, 5-1 NE10) hosts Assumption College next Saturday at 1 p.m.
