Chestnut Hill Defeats Women's Tennis, 7-2


Freshman Nicole Downey earned wins at No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles.

Regionally-ranked Josso and Scholtze lead Griffins 

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (September 18, 2015) – Chestnut Hill College, ranked No. 5 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, opened its season with a 7-2 victory over Stonehill College, ranked sixth in the region, in non-conference women's tennis action at Chestnut Hill Courts this afternoon.

The regionally-ranked duo of junior Laure-Ann Josso (Vannes, France) and sophomore Lara Scholtze (Bod Homburg, Germany) led Chestnut Hill to the win with singles and doubles victories. Josso and senior Axe Owens (Trenton, New Jersey/Pennington School) teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while Scholtze and senior Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario/The Bishop Strachan School) gave the Griffins a 2-1 edge after doubles play with their 8-5 decision at No. 2.

Josso, the sixth-ranked singles player in the East Region and 50th-ranked nationally by the ITA, added a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles against Stonehill senior Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Michigan/Marian). Scholtze, ranked 20th in the region, battled past sophomore Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) 7-6 (6-4), 7-5 at No. 2 singles. Williams-Mulesa was also a double-winner for the Griffins, contributing a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles against sophomore Emma Prinos (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Foxboro).

Freshman Nicole Downey (Groveland, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) earned both singles and doubles wins for Stonehill. She and senior Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, Rhode Island/The Lincoln School) gave the Skyhawks an early lead with their 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles. Downey also claimed the Skyhawks lone singles point with her 6-3, 6-2 win over Owens at No. 4.

Stonehill (3-2, 2-1 NE-10) will remain in Philadelphia for the weekend as it competes at the United State Tennis Association (USTA)/ITA Division II East Regional, hosted by University of Sciences, at Legacy Tennis Center, Saturday through Monday. Chestnut Hill (1-0, 0-0 CACC) will also participate in the ITA Championships.
