Southern N.H. Holds Off Stonehill, 5-4

Baum battles to clinching win at No. 5 singles for Penmen 

EASTON, Mass. (September 9, 2015) – Southern New Hampshire University, ranked seventh in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, held off Stonehill College, ranked sixth in the region, for a 5-4 season-opening triumph in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Sophomore Lindsay Baum (North Salem, New York/North Salem) clinched the key early season win by grinding out a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles against Stonehill sophomore Emma Prinos (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Foxboro). Senior Ashley Loft (Leysin, Switzerland) and graduate student Nour Kaddour (Paris, France) were both double-winners for the Penmen in the win. Loft combined with freshman Kaitlin Poje (East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania) for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles and then added a 6-2, 6-3 win over Stonehill senior Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Michigan/Marian) at No. 1 singles.

Kaddour and senior Yolanda Green (Springfield, Massachusetts/Longmeadow) teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles that clinched a vital 2-1 SNHU edge after doubles play. Kaddour followed that up with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles against senior Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, Rhode Island/The Lincoln School).

Stonehill battled back from 3-1 and 4-2 deficits to level the match at 4-4 after sophomore Victoria Barbetta's (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles against Poje. Senior Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) and junior Lorraine Smith (Littleton, Colorado/D'Evelyn) each chipped in points for the Skyhawks in singles play as well. Kump registered a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles against Green, while Smith topped freshman Rachel Wagner (Framingham, Massachusetts/Framingham) 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.

Toegemann and freshman Nicole Downey (Groveland, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) combined to earn Stonehill's doubles point with their 8-2 win at No. 3.

Stonehill (1-1, 0-1 NE-10) returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Saint Anselm College for an NE-10 matchup at Watt Courts at 1 p.m. Southern New Hampshire (1-0, 1-0 NE-10) hosts Adelphi University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
