Downey Named NE-10 Rookie of the Week

Groveland, Mass., freshman leads Skyhawks to season-opening win in collegiate debut

EASTON, Mass. (September 9, 2015) – Stonehill College freshman Nicole Downey (Groveland, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference's Rookie of the Week for women's tennis by the league office today.

Downey was a double-winner in her collegiate debut as Stonehill opened its 2015-16 season with a 5-4 non-conference victory at Post University on Sunday. She combined with senior co-captain Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) to cruise to an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles as the Skyhawks clinched a 2-1 edge in the dual match following doubles play. Downey then clinched the winning point for Stonehill with her 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles against Post freshman Jessica Bergen.

Downey is a 2015 high honors graduate of Pentucket Regional High School in West Newbury, Massachusetts. She played No. 1 singles all four years for the Sachems, earning All-League honors all four years and Player of the Year honors as a junior and senior.

Stonehill (1-0, 0-0 NE-10), ranked sixth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, is right back in action today as it hosts rival Southern New Hampshire for its home and NE-10 opener at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks also host Saint Anselm College for an NE-10 dual match on Sunday at 1 p.m.
