Downey a double-winner, earns clinching point in collegiate debut

WATERBURY, Conn. (September 6, 2015) – Stonehill College, ranked sixth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, opened its 2015 fall season with a 5-4 victory over Post University in non-conference women's tennis action this afternoon.

Sophomore Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) and freshman Nicole Downey (Groveland, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) were both double-winners to lead Stonehill to the victory. Downey earned the Skyhawks clinching point in her collegiate debut with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over freshman Jessica Bergen. Downey also combined with senior co-captain Analise Kump (Falmouth, Massachusetts/Falmouth) for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.

Barbetta and senior Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, Rhode Island/The Lincoln School) clinched a 2-1 Stonehill advantage after doubles play by edging their way to an 8-6 triumph at No. 2. Barbetta followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles against sophomore Brianna Miah that drew the Skyhawks within a point of victory. Junior Lorraine Smith (Littleton, Colorado/D'Evelyn) notched a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles for the Skyhawks against freshman Sarah Namazi.

Sophomore Liza Dubrovskaya and freshman Madison Young both earned two points for Post, starting with their 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles. Dubrovskaya followed that up with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles against Kump, while Young rallied for a 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 decision at No. 4 singles against sophomore Emma Prinos (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Foxboro).

Stonehill (1-0, 0-0 NE-10) is back in action on Wednesday when it opens its Northeast-10 Conference schedule with a big early season test against rival Southern New Hampshire University, ranked seventh in the region, for its home opener at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 3 p.m. Post (0-1, 0-0 CACC) hosts Goldey-Beacom College on Friday at 3 p.m.
