Stonehill Competes at USTA/ITA East Regional


Senior co-captain Meryl Lawrence reached the quarterfinal round of the B-singles draw at the ITA East Region this weekend.

Lawrence reaches B-Singles Draw quarterfinals to lead Skyhawks contingent 

FLUSHING, N.Y. (September 29, 2014) – The Stonehill College women's tennis team competed at the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional Championships, hosted by Queens (N.Y.) College and Daemen College, at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center this weekend.

Senior co-captain Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, Rhode Island/Mount Saint Charles Academy) had the most success for Stonehill over the three day event by reaching the quarterfinal round of the B-singles bracket. She breezed to three straight 6-0 victories in the first, second and third rounds before being defeated by Tatiana Rajaona from Molloy College 6-0 in the quarters. Lawrence posted victories over Molly Fanelli from Queens in the first round, Christie Catterson from Molloy, who had received a first round bye, in the second and Emily Linhart of Roberts Wesleyan in the third.

Junior Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) and freshman Emma Prinos (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Foxboro) also advanced to the quarterfinals in the B-Doubles draw. They opened with back to back wins over fellow Northeast-10 Conference members from Merrimack College (7-5) and Southern New Hampshire University (6-2) before being edged by Nyenyeri Kanefu and Bianca Signore from St. Thomas Aquinas College, 6-4 in the quarters.

Kump and junior Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Michigan/Marian) both competed in the A-Singles Championship bracket. Kump fell in the first round, while Paradiso picked up a 6-1, 6-2 first round win against Natalia Cardona from Roberts Wesleyan in the first round before being edged by Maria Victoria from Goldey-Beacom College 6-4, 7-6 in the second.

Paradiso and freshman Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) represented Stonehill in the A-Doubles Championship draw. The duo claimed a 9-7 first round decision over Fatima Outtara and Klara Lang from Roberts Wesleyan in the first round before being topped by No. 4-seeded Alexandra Borgenoff and Justyna Krul from New York Institute of Technology 8-3 in the second.

Stonehill (5-0, 5-0 NE-10), ranked ninth in the ITA Division II East Regional rankings, is right back in action tomorrow when it hosts Franklin Pierce University for a Northeast-10 Conference match at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 3 p.m.
