WEST HAVEN, Connecticut (September 14, 2019) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team defeated the University of New Haven, 1-0, in its Northeast-10 Conference opener Saturday afternoon at Kathy Zolad Stadium.

Stonehill's (3-1, 1-0 NE10) junior Alex Giardina recorded her first goal of the season and eighth of her career, as senior Kaitlin Brown recorded her first shutout of the season, and 11th of her career.

Stonehill dominated in both halves, as they totaled 29 shots with 14 of them being on goal. The Skyhawks also saw multiple chances in set pieces and corners as they saw nine free balls and seven corner kicks. New Haven was only able to get off two shots and two corners during the shutout, as the Chargers drew 12 fouls.

In the 66th minute, Emma Slade sent the ball inside the box from about 25 yards out, and Giardina followed the ball all the way in as a New Haven defender blocked her access. Giardina was able to work her way around getting enough access to the ball to send it to the back of the net after a series of deflections for a 1-0 lead. This was her third game winning goal in her career.

Stonehill hosts NE10 foe Franklin Pierce University for its home opener on Wednesday, September 18 on Skyhawk Field with a start time of 3:30 p.m.
