Women’s Soccer Opens Conference Play with 2-0 Shutout Over Saint Rose

Thompson scores two for her second and third goals of the season


Campo registered her first helper of the season, fifth of her career

EASTON, Massachusetts (September 8, 2018) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team opened Northeast-10 Conference play by collecting their fourth-straight win and shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory over the College of Saint Rose Saturday afternoon at Skyhawk Field.

Stonehill (4-0-0, 1-0-0 NE10) saw Camryn Thompson with her second and third goals of the season, with assists from Courtney Campo and Nicole Garfield. Junior goalkeeper Kaitlin Brown tallied five saves in her fourth win of the season.

Stonehill attempted getting on board quickly in the first half, as the Skyhawks saw the first corner of the game and two shots by Garfield and one by Nicole Geraghty in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Skyhawks continued pressing the Golden Knights' defense including back-to-back shots in the 32nd minute and in the 37th minute, which including a goal by Thompson. Campo took the ball inside the 18-yard box on the left hand side and sent a cross in front of the net, finding Thompson who was able to beat the defender for a one touch to the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage in the 38th minute of the game.


Garfield tallied her second assist of the season, seventh career

Stonehill saw another attempt in the 42nd minute, one by Kayla Henry that was stopped by the goalkeeper and Saint Rose's Nina Predanic sent the ball high and was tipped over the crossbar by Brown. Saint Rose was close again with leveling the score at 44:35 as Predanic sent the ball high just tipping the crossbar on a free kick from 25 yards out.

As play continued in the second half, both teams kept battling and taking turns with possession, but the Skyhawks outshot the Golden Knights 7-4, including a goal in the 77th minute of play by Stonehill's Thompson. Off a Geraghty corner kick, the ball was punched out by the goalkeeper who fell after contact, and Garfield was able to strike the ball after the scuffle through a handful of Saint Rose defenders, giving Thompson the opportunity to tip it in for a 2-0 advantage. Both teams had another late attempt with 10 minutes left in the game, as Alex Giardina headed the ball wide left and Predanic lifted a free kick over the cross bar again about 35 yards out.

Stonehill continues NE10 play hosting Assumption College on Wednesday, September 12 on Skyhawk Field with an opening kickoff at 4 p.m.
