Women’s Soccer Blanks Nyack, 5-0, in Season Opener

Three Skyhawks recorded three points each in the first win of the season

OLD WESTBURY, New York (August 31, 2018) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team opened the season with a 5-0 shutout against non-conference foe Nyack College at President's Stadium Friday night.

Stonehill (1-0) saw five different goal scorers in the victory, including Kayla Henry (Belchertown, Massachusetts/Belchertown), Alex Giardina (Middletown, Connecticut/Middletown), Camryn Thompson (Lincoln, Rhode Island/Lincoln), Gianna Cokinos (Dix Hills, New York/Half Hollow Hills High School West), and Caroline Colbert (Peabody, Massachsuetts/Peabody Veterans). Giardina, Henry, and Thompson also added in an assist in the victory, while Elizabeth Nerger (Marshfield, Massachusetts/Marshfield) chipped in two helpers.

The Skyhawks jumped on the board early with a goal from Henry at 3:27 in the first half. Giardina sent a pass to the middle as Henry met with Nyack's goalkeeper and was able to send it to the back of the net with her left foot, 1-0. Henry tallied her first goal of the season and third of her career. Stonehill only had two more shots before they were able to extend their lead to two, 2-0 at 27:33 in the first half. This time Henry gave the ball to Giardina who was able to put the ball away for her first goal of the season and sixth of her career.

Nyack saw a few chances after Stonehill's second goal, as the Skyhawks saw three fouls to the Warriors one. In the 38th minute, Stonehill's freshman Thompson scored her first-collegiate goal with an assist from Nerger. Nerger sent a through ball to the freshman, who was able to dribble around the goalkeeper for the third goal of the game, 3-0. Stonehill squeezed in one more goal before the half was over, as Cokinos scored her first-collegiate goal after a defensive clear sending a blast to the upper 90 from just outside the 18-yard box.

Stonehill quickly picked up a fifth goal within six minutes of the second half in the 52nd minute. The Skyhawks' Nerger had a shot earlier in the 48th minute and Stonehill kept possession as Nerger chipped the ball to Thompson who sent a cross to Colbert. Colbert knocked the ball into the net off her chest for a 5-0 advantage at 51:03. The Warriors were only able to get two other shots off in the last three minutes of the second half for a total of three in the game, as junior goalkeeper Kaitlin Brown (Walpole, Massachusetts/Walpole) was able to stop two of them in the victory.

Stonehill faces New York Institute of Technology tomorrow, Saturday, September 1 at 1:30 p.m. at President's Stadium for the second game of the East Region Crossover Cup.
