Stonehill's 14-6 shot advantage was not enough in the 90 minutes of play
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (October 18, 2016) – The No. 24 Stonehill College women's soccer team fell to Southern Connecticut State University, 1-0, Tuesday night at the Jess Dow Field in a Northeast-10 contest.
Stonehill's (11-4-1, 7-4-1 NE-10) Jamie Block (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) tallied three saves in the loss. As a team, the Skyhawks recorded five shots on goal and 14 shots in the game.
Southern Connecticut's (7-5-3, 6-3-2 NE-10) Caroline Staudle recorded the game-winning goal, as Kieran DeBiase assisted the header in the 64th minute of the game. Goalkeeper Gabrielle Arruda registered five saves on the night.
The Skyhawks saw many opportunities in the first half as the team totaled 10 shots to the Owls' one lone shot. Amidst the three Stonehill corner kicks, Lauren Kapatoes (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) and Brianna Duserick (Canton, Mass./Canton) were able to get a piece of the ball by heading the ball wide and high, respectively.
The Skyhawks opened up the second half with two-straight shots including a hard one-timer from Madalyn Fernbach (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) that was blocked and another header by Kapatoes that was saved by Arruda in the 48th minute. The Owls were able to get off two shots, while the Skyhawks saw one more before Southern Connecticut picked up a tally in the 64th minute of the game. Straudle headed the ball in the right side of the net off a pass from DeBiase, giving the Owls an 1-0 edge.
Stonehill's Fernbach was able to squeeze in one last effort in the last 20 seconds of the game before the final horn.
Stonehill takes on Northeast-10 Conference opponent Merrimack College for its last regular season home contest on Wednesday, October 26 for a 3 p.m. match on Skyhawk Field.
