COLCHESTER, Vt. (September 3, 2016) - The Stonehill women's soccer team earned its first Catholic Cup Championship in school history Saturday afternoon in Colchester, Vermont with a 1-0 win over Saint Anselm College.

With the victory, Stonehill (2-0) opens the 2016 season undefeated for the first time since 2014, as Saint Anselm drops to 1-1.

At the conclusion of two hard-fought games, Stonehill earned four selections on the Catholic Cup All-Tournament Team. Senior Lauren Kapatoes (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) was named MVP for her two-goal and one assist weekend, while classmate Jamie Block (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) dominated in goal as she saved 12 shots on net and only allowed one score. Senior Brianna Duserick (Canton, Mass./Canton) earned her way with her offensive skills and her two assists against Assumption College, as junior Taylor Shannahan (Mendham, N.J./Morris Catholic) was key both offensively and defensively as she was constantly involved in both sides of the ball.

"It was a classic Northeast-10 Conference battle," stated head coach Alex Wilson. "We Started the game with a plan of how we wanted each minute to go and I think we executed well and were able to capitalize on some opportunities – especially the one that led to our goal. We played with intensity and stuck to our style throughout the weekend. The team was focused and wanted to start out 2-0 on the season and we did that."

Early in the first half, Stonehill attacked early and often recording eight shots and capitalizing on one by Kapatoes in the 23rd minute of play. Duserick sent a cross to Kapatoes, but the Hawks' Cassie Quattropani interfered. Quattropani dropped the ball right at Kapatoes' feet, giving her an open shot to the net.

The second half remained scoreless, but Saint Anselm fought back with whatever was left and got off four shots. The Hawks were unable to connect on its five corner kicks throughout the 90 minutes and Block stood her ground in the net saving two of the two shots on goal.

Stonehill hosts Molloy College for its home opener on Thursday, September 8 with a 4 p.m. start time.
