Ganiaris gave Stonehill the 1-0 advantage early in the game

COLCHESTER, Vt. (September 2, 2016) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2016 season as it capitalized on a few opportunities to beat Assumption College, 3-1,  Friday afternoon in Colchester, Vermont.

Senior Daniella Ganiaris (Fort Salonga, N.Y) took advantage of a free kick from classmate Brianna Duserick (Canton, Mass./Canton) only 10:15 into the first half giving the Skyhawks an early 1-0 lead. Assumption persisted throughout the first stanza recording 13 shots, while Stonehill tallied six shots.

The Greyhounds came out of halftime with fire as Amanda Arnold launched a long ball into the net past senior goalkeeper Jamie Block (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) to knot the score at one with 34:06 remaining in the second half. Sophomore Caroline Colbert (Peabody, Mass./Peabody Veterans Memorial) recorded her first-career goal as senior Lauren Kapatoes (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) sent the ball up the sideline, as Colbert centered, tipping the ball past the Greyhound's Emily Kuzma with 21:39 left in the game.

Stonehill was able to squeeze in one final tally as Duserick crossed the ball to Kapatoes who tapped the ball into the right side of the net past the Kuzma scoring her seventh goal of her career with 5:56 remaining in the game.

Block dominated Stonehill's defense as she saved nine of the 10 shots on goal during the game.

With the win, Stonehill (1-0, 0-0 NE-10) advances to the Catholic Cup championship match,  for the first time since 2014, as it will take on Saint Anselm College at 3 p.m.
