Skyhawks earn eighth seed in next week's NE-10 Championship, will be on the road for quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (November 1, 2014) – Stonehill College held a 1-0 advantage for almost 85 minutes of action, but Adelphi University scored twice in the final five minutes to deal Stonehill a 2-1 defeat in the regular season finale for both teams this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer action at Motamed Field.
Despite the setback, the Skyhawks have still qualified for next week's NE-10 Championship as the eighth seed. Stonehill will be on the road at either Assumption College or the College of Saint Rose, depending on Assumption's result tonight.
Stonehill took a 1-0 lead 23:56 into the first half when sophomore forward Hannah Fay (Tolland, Connecticut/Tolland) headed home a corner kick taken by junior forward Meagan Elliott (Norton, Massachusetts/Norton). The goal was Fay's second of the season, as she also scored in Stonehill's season-opening win against Assumption.
The Skyhawks held onto their slim lead until the closing minutes, when Adelphi evened the score at the 84:52 mark. Junior back Taylor Salmon (West Hempstead, New York/Kellenberg) found the back of the net on a free kick opportunity from 22 yards out for her third goal of the season.
The match appeared to be headed for overtime, when the Panthers struck again just over two minutes later for the game-winning goal. Junior midfielder Christina Dutcher (Bellport, New York/Bellport) took a feed from sophomore forward Sarah Barone Stern (Staten Island, New York/Notre Dame Academy) and beat Stonehill sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Block (Georgetown, Massachusetts/Georgetown) with just 3:05 left on the clock.
Block, who was five minutes from registering her fifth shutout of the season, made six saves in defeat. Her counterpart, Adelphi senior goalkeeper Sam Whitney (West Islip, New York/West Islip), stopped one first half shot for the Panthers.
Adelphi outshot Stonehill 11-6 in the contest, including 7-3 in the decisive second half. The home team also held a 6-1 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Stonehill ends its regular season at 8-7-2 overall, including 6-6-2 in conference play. The eighth-seeded Skyhawks will be on the road for the quarterfinal round of the NE-10 Championship on Tuesday at either Assumption or Saint Rose. Adelphi (12-4-1, 9-4-1 NE-10) earns the third seed, and the Panthers will host sixth-seeded Le Moyne College on Tuesday.
