Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Block makes six saves for Skyhawks
MANCHESTER, N.H. (October 29, 2014) – Saint Anselm College scored both of its goals in the first half of a 2-0 victory over Stonehill College this evening in Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer action at Grappone Stadium.
Saint Anselm freshman forward Alexis Elowitch (Portland, Maine/Deering), who entered tonight's match leading the Hawks with 14 points on six goals and two assists, got it started for the home team in the 15th minute with the help of senior midfielder Jenna Szostak (Carver, Massachusetts/Carver).
Szostak played a through ball to Elowitch, who beat a Stonehill defender before finishing with a soft touch past Skyhawks sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Block (Georgetown, Massachusetts/Georgetown) for the game's first goal. Block made six saves in the match, as did Saint Anselm sophomore keeper Cassie Quattropani (East Hartford, Connecticut/East Hartford).
The Hawks made it 2-0 late in the half when freshman forward Kaila Sullivan's (Burlington, Massachusetts/Arlington Catholic) shot deflected off a Stonehill defender and into the net at the 37:25 mark.
Stonehill was unable to break through in the second half, as Quattropani registered her third shutout of the season. The Hawks held a slim 15-14 edge in shots in the contest, and the home team also had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Despite tonight's loss, Stonehill still has an opportunity to secure a spot in next week's NE-10 Championship. The Skyhawks will clinch a berth with a win at Adelphi University on Saturday, or with a Saint Anselm draw/loss in the Hawks' regular season finale at Le Moyne.
Tonight's contest served as the second meeting between Stonehill and Saint Anselm this season. The two teams played a scoreless first half in the championship match of the Catholic Cup tournament on September 6th, but the contest was called before the second half could begin due to lightning.
Stonehill (8-6-2, 6-5-2 NE-10) will wrap up its regular season slate on Saturday afternoon at Adelphi. Saint Anselm (7-5-3, 5-5-3 NE-10) will also be on the road for its regular season finale, as the Hawks are set to take on Le Moyne Saturday morning.
