Junior Meagan Elliott scores team-leading fifth goal of the season for Skyhawks
EASTON, Mass. (October 11, 2014) – Freshman forward Amanda Arnold (Dayton, Maine/Thornton Academy) registered a goal and an assist to lead Assumption College, ranked sixth in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) East Region Poll, past Stonehill College, ranked fifth in the NSCAA East Region Poll, this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) women's soccer action at Skyhawk Field.
The Greyhounds offense was fueled by Arnold and junior midfielder Paige Radomski (Kingston, Massachusetts/Silver Lake Regional), who entered today's match tied for second in the NE-10 with 17 points each. Both Arnold and Radomski scored the first time these two teams met this season, in Stonehill's 4-2 Catholic Cup victory that served as the season opener for both teams on September 5th.
Arnold opened the scoring this afternoon in the sixth minute, when her pressure in the box forced a Stonehill turnover, resulting in the freshman's ninth goal of the season.
Assumption carried its lead into the half and struck again in the 49th minute to take a 2-0 advantage. This time, it was Arnold providing the assist on a give-and-go play with Radomski, who found the back of the net for the eighth time this fall.
The Skyhawks would continue to battle and finally broke through in the 89th minute, snapping a two-match scoreless streak in the process. Junior forward Meagan Elliott (Norton, Massachusetts/Norton) won a footrace to the ball with Assumption senior goalkeeper Rachel Edgin (Whitesboro, New York/Whitesboro) and easily slotted the ball into the open net.
Edgin stopped six of the seven shots that came her way, while Stonehill sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Block (Georgetown, Massachusetts/Georgetown) turned aside four shots on the other end.
Stonehill outshot Assumption 16-12 in the contest, including 11-3 in the second half, but the Greyhounds held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
Stonehill (6-4-1, 4-3-1 NE-10) will look to snap its three-match losing streak on Wednesday, when the Skyhawks host Merrimack College at 3:30 p.m. in their second to last home game of the regular season. Assumption (8-2, 7-1 NE-10) is also back in action on Wednesday, as the Greyhounds are set to host top ranked The College of Saint Rose.
