EASTON, Mass. (September 17, 2014) – Stonehill College scored in the opening ten minutes of each half and held on for a 2-1 victory over visiting Saint Michael's College this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer action at Skyhawk Field.

Just under ten minutes into the contest, senior midfielder Kate Wegener (Brockton, Massachusetts/Brockton) led junior forward Meagan Elliott (Norton, Massachusetts/Norton) into the 18-yard box and past several Saint Michael's defenders with a perfectly timed through ball. Elliott took the ball in stride and beat Saint Michael's senior goalkeeper Aubrey Ouellet (Bedford, New Hampshire/Bedford) for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Stonehill would carry its 1-0 lead into halftime, and the Skyhawks struck for a second score in the 52nd minute. Following a throw in, senior midfielder Maddie Manning (Weymouth, Massachusetts/Weymouth) sent a cross towards the far post. Sophomore forward Lauren Kapatoes (Hopedale, Massachusetts/Hopedale) charged into the box unmarked and headed the ball just inside the post and past the reach of Ouellet.

Saint Michael's would get one goal back in the 65th minute, as junior midfielder Cassie Chernicki (Hanson, Massachusetts/Whitman-Hanson Regional) headed home a rebound after teammate Amanda Shannahan (Hull, Massachusetts/Notre Dame Academy) launched a shot on net.

Match Highlights

Chernicki's goal snapped Stonehill sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Block's (Georgetown, Massachusetts/Georgetown) shutout streak of over 311 minutes, dating back to the Skyhawks' season opening victory over Assumption College. Block made four saves for Stonehill, while Ouellet turned back one shot for the Purple Knights.

Stonehill had an opportunity to add another score late, as Wegener fired a shot towards the goal from just outside the box in the 89th minute, but the ball struck the crossbar and bounced to Ouellet.

Stonehill (4-0, 2-0 NE-10) will look to extend its perfect start on Saturday, as the Skyhawks hit the road to take on Le Moyne College at 11 a.m. Stonehill will then head to Franklin Pierce University next Wednesday night, before returning to Skyhawk Field to host the University of New Haven on September 27th. Saint Michael's (2-3, 1-1 NE-10) is also back in action on Saturday, as the Purple Knights are set to travel to Assumption, before returning to Colchester, Vermont, for three straight matches.
