Wheaton named first team All-New England goalkeeper
Nagle selected to All-New England second team
EASTON, Mass. (December 21, 2012) – Two members of the Stonehill College women's soccer team have earned All-New England honors from the New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) the organization has announced.
Junior goalkeeper Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) earns All-New England honors for the first time with her selection to the NEWISA first team, while senior back Sara Nagle (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) has been named to the NEWISA second team defense for the third-straight year.
Wheaton, an honorable mention Daktronics All-American and Northeast-10 Conference Goalkeeper of the Year, has also earned first team Daktronics All-Region, first team All-Northeast-10 and second team NSCAA All-Region honors after serving as the backbone to the Stonehill defensive unit this fall. She posted eight shutouts in 17 starts, with a 0.65 goals against average, 96 saves and an .889 save percentage. Wheaton led the NE-10 this season for save percentage (8th nationally), while ranking second for shutouts, third for goals against average (27th), fourth for minutes played (11th) and seventh for total saves (43rd).
Wheaton has played 43 games (39 starts) over her career at Stonehill and turned away 211 shots (4.9/match), recording a 0.75 GAA in nearly 4,000 minutes in net. The junior goalkeeper has compiled 15 career shutouts which ties her for fourth all-time on the career shutouts list at Stonehill. Wheaton also ranks third and fourth, respectively, on the single-season goals against average list with a 0.65 GAA mark in 2012 and a 0.72 GAA in 2011.
Nagle, a second team All-Northeast-10 and third team NSCAA All-Region selection this fall, is a three-time All-Region and All-NE-10 pick over her career. Stonehill's defensive anchor never missed a match at Stonehill making 74-consecutive starts on the back line. The Skyhawks defense has registered a 0.94 team goals against average in 6,960 minutes over that time. Nagle played a key role for a defense that set a new single-season program record for fewest goals allowed with 12, ranking second in the NE-10 for team GAA (0.65) and fourth in shutouts (8).
Nagle, an NE-10 All-Rookie Team selection in 2009, has compiled numerous awards at the College both on the field and in the classroom. Nagle was chosen to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District second team as a junior and has also received two NCAA Division II ADA Academic Achievement awards and one NE-10 Academic All-Conference selection over her career. She participated in the NEWISA Senior Bowl at Merrimack College earlier this month.
Stonehill posted a 6-5-6 overall record during the 2012 season, missing out on a spot in the NE-10 tournament by just a single point with its 5-5-5 Conference mark putting the Skyhawks in ninth place. Three of the Skyhawks five losses were by just one goal and the team played nine overtime matches, posting four scoreless double-overtime draws.
