Late score sends Chargers ahead

EASTON, Mass. (October 16, 2010) – Stonehill College was edged 1-0 by the University of New Haven in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer matchup on Saturday at home.

New Haven took a late lead in the 82nd minute, when freshman Monica Yanez (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) netted the game’s lone goal, and held on for the narrow victory. Junior Kim Taylor (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) made five saves in the net for the Chargers, and freshman Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) made two stops for Stonehill.

Stonehill outshot New Haven 9-3 in the first half, but neither side found the back of the net as the game remained scoreless at the break. Junior Kelsey Mahoney (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) led the offensive attack for the Skyhawks, putting three shots on target for the day, but Taylor was up to the task in the net and held the Skyhawks off the board to allow New Haven to break through.

The Chargers managed it at 81:35, when senior Meabh De Burca (County Galway, Ireland/Nat. University of Ireland-Galway) sent a pass through to Yanez, who knocked it home for the final 1-0 advantage.

Stonehill (8-6-1, 6-4-1 NE-10) is on the road for the next two games, beginning with a visit to Franklin Pierce University on October 19 at 4 p.m., before returning for their final regular-season home game on October 27 at 3:30 p.m.
