Women's Lacrosse Splits Pair on Spring Break

#7 Florida Southern defeats Skyhawks, 15-10

EASTON, Mass. (March 11, 2020) – Stonehill College split a pair of games during its spring break trip, opening with a 23-12 victory over Saint Thomas Aquinas College on Monday and then dropping a hard-fought 15-10 decision at Florida Southern College, ranked No. 7 in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, tonight.

Stonehill 23, Saint Thomas Aquinas 12 

  • Senior Jennifer Wheaton led Stonehill with eight points, scoring four goals and dishing out four assists.
  • Freshman Lydia Rudden added seven points with three goals and four assists.
  • Senior Kaity Healey registered two goals and three assists for five points.
  • Senior Bailey Grant posted six saves over the first 43-minutes in goal for Stonehill.
  • Junior Kaitlyn Gutenberger led St. Thomas Aquinas with four goals and two assists for six points, while postgrad Jennifer Farrell totaled five points with four goals and an assist.
  • After Gutenberger opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game and then Stonehill grabbed control with an 11-1 run to open an 11-2 lead after Wheaton's first goal of the game with ten minutes to play. Rudden scored three goals and added three assists during the opening run.
  • STAC closed back within 13-6 at the half, led by a pair of goals from Gutenberger and Farrell in the last 6:19.
  • Stonehill scored the first four goals of the second half, including a pair by Wheaton, to open a 17-6 lead after 6:08.
  • STAC answered with three-straight to pull back within eight (17-9) after a marker from junior Arielle Rodriguez with 16:22 to play.
  • Stonehill sealed the win from there, netting the next six goals, the first two by Healey, to open a 14-goal lead (23-9) with 5:30 left.

#7 Florida Southern 15, Stonehill 10

  • Kaity Healey led Stonehill with four goals and an assist, while collecting three draw controls and two ground balls.
  • Freshman Kayla Conway added two goals, while junior Shannon Hughes and Lydia Rudden each chipped in with a goal and assist.
  • Bailey Grant kept Stonehill in the game with a career-high 19 saves.
  • Senior Julia Couch led Florida Southern with five goals
  • Senior Riley Bannatyne added four goals, 11 draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers, while sophomore Brenna Smith totaled four points with two goals and two assists.
  • Junior Brittany Iamele posted seven saves over the first 45:10 in the Mocs goal, while sophomore Patricia Werkler stopped all five shots on goal she faced over the final 14:50.
  • Florida Southern answered an opening goal by Healey with five-straight goals, the first two by senior Marina Jozokos within two minutes of Healey's opener 4:22 into the game.

    Rudden stopped the run with a goal, but the Mocs stretched their lead to five (7-2) after a free-position goal by Bannatyne with 10:26 left in the half.
  • Stonehill scored the last two goals of the half to trim its deficit to three (7-4) at the break and then scored the first three of the second half to pull even after back to back goals from Healey within a two-minute span.
  • Florida Southern scored the next five goals, including three by Couch, over a four-minute span to restore a five-goal lead (12-7) with 19-minutes left.
  • Conway scored two goals and then Pino added a marker off a Healey feed to pull back within two (12-10) with 14:50 still to play, but the Mocs sealed the win with the final three goals, including two by Bannatyne.

Stonehill (2-2, 1-1 NE10) is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, March 17, when it hosts Southern New Hampshire University for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at W.B. Mason Stadium at 3:30 p.m.
