Conway leads Setters with five goals, including winner 2:35 into overtime

(April 10, 2019) – Pace University, ranked No. 20 in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, answered a late second half rally from Stonehill College for a 12-11 overtime triumph in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action on Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium tonight.
Freshman Kayla Conway netted a game-high five goals, including the game-winner 2:35 into overtime, to lead Pace to the win, adding nine draw controls and a ground ball for the Setters. Senior Juliana Marcolini added three goals and an assist, while classmate Amanda Dickerson contributed two goals and an assist, with a draw and caused turnover. Sophomore Carlyn Mucci chipped in with a goal, assist and two draws.
Freshman Sienna Masullo registered 11 saves in the Pace goal, while senior Alex Maitland-Ward paced the Setters defense with six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Junior Bailey Grant finished with 12 saves in the Stonehill goal, collecting three ground balls and a caused turnover.
Junior Kaity Healey led Stonehill with three goals and an assist, while adding four draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomores Shannon Hughes and Olivia Pino each netted two goals for the Skyhawks, while Hughes also tallied two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Junior Jennifer Wheaton chipped in with a goal and assist, while sophomore Emily Sharretts collected five draws and two ground balls.
Conway's fifth goal of the night 2:35 into overtime answered a Stonehill comeback from a three-goal deficit in the second half. Stonehill won the opening draw of the extra period, but a turnover after a minute of possession gave Pace an overtime possession. Mucci had a pair of shots, including a free-position attempt, go wide, but the Skyhawks could not regain possession after either try, and Conway ended the game with her 13th goal of the year.

Stonehill scored four of the last five goals in the final 16:22 of regulation to force the extra frame. The Skyhawks trailed by three (10-7) with 19:47 to play after back-to-back Conway goals. Pino netted her first of the night with 16:22 on the clock and then Healey's third of the night on a free-position attempt pulled the hosts back within a goal (10-9) with 14-minutes remaining.
Mucci's 15th goal of the season restored a two-goal cushion for Pace with ten minutes left, and then Stonehill pulled even with a pair in the last 3:32. Wheaton's 21st goal of the year, assisted by Healey, drew the Skyhawks back within one and then Pino converted a free-position try with 44-seconds left to equalize for the first time since a 4-4 deadlock midway through the first half. Stonehill won the ensuing draw, but was unable to get a shot before a turnover just before time expired.
Stonehill staked out an early 3-1 lead after back-to-back markers from Hughes in the first five minutes of the game. Pace responded with three-straight, including a pair by Marcolini, to grab its first lead (4-3) after a Rafferty goal with 18:22 left in the half. Freshman Emma Sullivan pulled Stonehill level (4-4) with 17:31 to play, but Dickerson followed with two-straight goals to give the Setters their first two-goal cushion with 8:16 remaining. The teams traded goals over the remainder of the half, but Pace held a 7-6 halftime edge.
Stonehill (7-5, 4-4 NE10) is back in action on Saturday, when it visits No. 2 Adelphi University at noon. The Skyhawks return to W.B. Mason Stadium on Saturday, April 20, to host 16th-ranked University of New Haven at noon. Pace (6-6, 4-4 NE10) hosts No. 19 Bentley University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
