Healey's overtime gamewinner answers Falcons second half rally

EASTON, Mass. (March 23, 2019) – Junior midfielder Kaity Healey's goal 2:12 into overtime lifted Stonehill College to a 12-11 triumph over rival Bentley University, ranked No. 20 in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action on Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.
Healey's gamewinner was her second goal of the afternoon to complete a three-point day as she also contributed an assist, seven draw controls, a ground ball and caused turnover. Sophomore Shannon Hughes paced the Stonehill offense with four goals, while junior Jennifer Wheaton also totaled four points with two goals and two assists. Freshman Emma Sullivan netted two goals for the Skyhawks, with four caused turnovers and six ground balls, while classmate Kendall Fressle contributed a goal and assist with two ground balls.
Sophomore Emily Sharretts recorded six ground balls and two caused turnovers for Stonehill, while freshman Julia D'Agostino collected four draws. Junior Bailey Grant finished with ten saves in the Stonehill goal, while Bentley junior Eliza Bresler recorded ten at the other end, while adding two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Freshman Caroline Boudreau powered Bentley back from a nine-goal second half deficit to force overtime by netting all six of her game-high goal total in the second half, while adding two draw controls. Sophomore Julia Glavin added four goals, eight draws, five ground balls and a caused turnover for the Falcons, while classmate Sandrine Heller dished out three assists. Senior MaryKate Staines chipped in with two assists, two ground balls and a caused turnover.

Bentley struck first in the contest with Glavin scoring less than two minutes in, but Stonehill followed by scoring the next ten goals to open a nine goal lead (10-1) after back-to-back Hughes markers in the opening 5:37 in the second half. The Skyhawks led 8-1 after the first half, with Healey leveling the score with her first of the day just over two minutes after Glavin's opener. Stonehill scored three goals within a two-minute span, keyed by a goal and assist from Fressle, to open a 4-1 lead after Hughes' first of the day with 14:33 remaining in the half. Wheaton contributed a goal and assist as Stonehill closed out the opening 30-minutes with four goals in the closing 8:44.
Boudreau scored the first two of her six second-half goals for Bentley in response to Hughes' scoring the first two markers of the second half, pulling the Falcons back within seven (10-3) with 19:02 left. Wheaton scored off a Healey feed with 15:35 left to stretch Stonehill's lead back to eight (11-3). The Falcons followed with an eight goal run in the final 11:20 of regulation to force overtime. Boudreau scored the first four goals of the run over a two-minute span, opening the run with 11:20 left and then adding goals at 10:12, 9:29 and then 9:16.
Glavin followed by scoring three of the Falcons next four markers, including back-to-back goals to cap the rally as she netted the equalizer with a free-position goal with 1:57 left in regulation. Stonehill won the ensuing draw, but both teams turned the ball over twice down the stretch to send the game to overtime.
Stonehill controlled possession in overtime, with Sullivan winning the opening draw, and then the Skyhawks overcame a turnover, when Sullivan forced a turnover in transition. After a timeout, Healey was fouled going to goal and then potted her 15th goal of the year to give Stonehill its first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since claiming back-to-back victories over a nationally-ranked Pace University squad to round out the regular season in 2017 and then in the NE10 quarterfinals.
Stonehill (5-2, 2-2 NE10) is right back in action here at W.B. Mason Stadium on Wednesday, when it hosts No. 9 LIU Post for a non-conference matchup at 3:30 p.m. Bentley (4-1, 2-1 NE10) visits Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
