Women's Lacrosse Wins Finale at Queens, 19-6

Jalinskas and Hughes lead Skyhawks with five points each

QUEENS, N.Y. (April 29, 2018) – Stonehill College closed out its 2018 season on a winning note with a 19-6 triumph over Queens (N.Y.) College in non-conference women's lacrosse action at QC Lacrosse Field this afternoon.

Junior Linna Jalinskas (Farmington, Connecticut/Farmington) and freshman Shannon Hughes (Franklin Square, New York/Kellenberg Memorial) paced the Stonehill attack with five points apiece, each totaling four goals and an assist. Jalinskas added two draw controls off the bench for the Skyhawks, while Hughes contributed two caused turnovers, two ground balls and a draw control. Sophomore MacKenzie Pleshaw (Franklin, Massachusetts/Franklin) and freshman Olivia Pino (North Andover, Massachusetts/North Andover) each netted three goals for the Skyhawks, while junior Logan Snelling (Duxbury, Massachusetts/Duxbury) added a goal and three assists, with seven draw controls. Sophomore Marissa Bazzano (South Windsor, Connecticut/East Catholic) chipped in with the first three points of her career with two goals and an assist.

Senior Taylor Shannahan (Mendham, New Jersey/Morris Catholic) filled the stat sheet in her final collegiate game with a goal and three assists for four points, while totaling five draw controls, four caused turnovers and four ground balls. She finishes the season with a program-record 75 ground balls this spring, with her 40 caused turnovers falling five shy of the single-season mark. Shannahan's 188 career ground balls are one shy of the program's all-time record of 189 by Stonehill Athletic Hall of Famer Erin Acone, '06 and her 83 career caused turnovers rank fifth all-time.

Sophomore Bailey Grant (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) finished with five saves in the Stonehill goal. Freshman Jessica Serpe (Holbrook, New York/Sachem East) registered nine saves in the Queens goal.

Junior Sarah Koehler (West Islip, New York/St. John the Baptist) led the Queens attack with two goals and two assists, with two ground balls, while classmate Margaret Iavarone (Stony Brook, New York/Ward Melville) netted two goals. Junior Patriece Ausili (Ridge, New York/Longwood) chipped in with a goal, five draw controls, three ground balls and a caused turnover.

Stonehill led start to finish, netting the first three goals of the contest in the opening four minutes on its way to a 7-1 lead after Pleshaw's second goal of the game with 15:58 remaining in the half. Hughes scored two of the first three goals of the game and finished with three overall during the opening run. Back to back goals from Iavarone and Ausili 1:21 apart drew Queens within six (10-4) with five minutes remaining in the half.

Stonehill added three goals from three different players in the closing four minutes of the half to carry a nine-goal lead into halftime (13-4). The Skyhawks extended the run to seven goals, with four more in the first 14 minutes of the second half to stretch the lead to 13 (17-4) after Pino's second goal of the day. Jalinskas scored the first three goals of the second frame, while Snelling dished two assists.

Stonehill closes out its season winners of its last two to finish with an 8-9 record overall, including 5-8 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Queens caps its season with a 5-11 record overall, including 1-7 in the East Coast Conference.
