Jalinskas nets six goals, Hughes totals six points to lead Skyhawks

SPARKILL, N.Y. (April 27, 2018) – Stonehill College staked out a ten goal lead by halftime and didn't look back in picking up a 22-6 triumph over Saint Thomas Aquinas College in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Spartan Field today.

Junior Linna Jalinskas (Farmington, Connecticut/Farmington) and freshman Shannon Hughes (Franklin Square, New York/Kellenberg Memorial) each totaled six points to lead Stonehill to the win. Jalinskas netted a game-high six goals, converting all three free-position shot attempts, while Hughes' season-high six points came with a season-high matching three goals and season-best three assists, with two ground balls and a caused turnover. Senior Brianna Doherty (Walpole, Massachusetts/Walpole) added three goals and an assist, while junior Logan Snelling (Duxbury, Massachusetts/Duxbury) and sophomore MacKenzie Pleshaw (Franklin, Massachusetts/Franklin) each scored three goals.

Snelling also collected seven draw controls, while senior Taylor Shannahan (Mendham, New Jersey/Morris Catholic) totaled ten draws and add three points with a goal and two assists. Freshman Olivia Pino (North Andover, Massachusetts/North Andover) chipped in with two goals. Junior Bailey Grant (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) recorded four saves over the first 47:55 in the Stonehill goal, before senior Bailey Herr (Oakhurst, New Jersey/Ocean Township) added a save over the closing 12:05. Junior Katherine Feigenbaum (Eastchester, New York/Eastchester) started in goal for St. Thomas Aquinas and made five saves in the first half, while classmate Lauren Delorenzo (Wantagh, New York/Wantagh) made one stop in the second half.

Senior Caroline Finnen (Hicksville, New York/Holy Trinity) led STAC with three goals, while sophomore Kaitlyn Gutenberger (Stony Point, New York/North Rockland) added two goals and an assist. Freshman Caitlin Verber (Yorktown Heights, New York/Yorktown) chipped in with two assists for the Spartans.

STAC held an early lead (3-2) six minutes into the game after back-to-back goals from Finnen 44-seconds apart. Stonehill seized control by scoring the next nine goals to grab an 11-3 lead after Jalinskas' fourth goal of the half on a free-position try with 3:46 remaining in the frame. Snelling and Pleshaw scored three goals apiece during the run, with Snelling knotting the score off a Shannahan assist with 21:29 remaining in the half and then Pleshaw scoring back-to-back markers to put the Skyhawks in front for good.

Stonehill got goals from three different players in the final 1:50 of the half to take a ten goal lead (14-4) into halftime. Doherty scored the first two goals of the second half, just 1:19 apart to stretch the Skyhawks lead to 12 (16-4) with 24:25 to play and then coasted the rest of the way to the win.

Stonehill (7-9, 5-8 NE10) closes out its 2018 season on Sunday, when it visits Queens (N.Y.) College for a non-conference matchup at 1 p.m. St. Thomas Aquinas (6-9, 4-6 ECC) visits NYIT for an East Coast Conference Quarterfinal on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
