Reh and Mazliah fire Chargers to sixth-straight win
WEST HAVEN, Conn. (April 21, 2018) – The University of New Haven, ranked No. 20 in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, scored ten goals in each half to claim a 20-13 triumph over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action at Kathy Zolad Stadium this afternoon.
Junior Mackenzie Reh (Medford, New York/Patchogue Medford) led the New Haven attack with seven goals and an assist for eight points, with four draw controls, while senior Jessica Mazliah (Holbrook, New York/Sachem North) totaled six points with four goals and two assists, collecting three ground balls. Sophomore Caroline Maher (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) contributed three goals and two assists for five points, adding three ground balls and two caused turnovers, with junior Samantha Galler (Marshfield, Massachusetts/Marshfield) netting three goals. Freshman Emily Holland (Londonderry, New Hampshire/Londonderry) chipped in with two goals, while sophomore Julia Jette (Franklin, Massachusetts/Franklin) dished out two assists and added six ground balls.
Sophomore Gianna Guerra (Thiells, New York/North Rockland) finished with 14 saves in the New Haven goal, while sophomore Bailey Grant (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) recorded nine stops in the Stonehill goal. New Haven converted 6-of-7 free-position shot attempts for the contest and was successful on all 15 clear attempts.

Junior Linna Jalinskas (Farmington, Connecticut/Farmington) netted a career-high seven goals in front of a home crowd of sorts to lead Stonehill, while senior Brianna Doherty (Walpole, Massachusetts/Walpole) matched her career-best with eight points on two goals and a career-high six assists, collecting five ground balls. Freshman Shannon Hughes (Franklin Square, New York/Kellenberg Memorial) scored a pair of goals for the Skyhawks, with two ground balls, a draw control and caused turnover. Senior Taylor Shannahan (Mendham, New Jersey/Morris Catholic) chipped in with an assist, four draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Stonehill scored the first two goals of the game, with Doherty playing a role in both with a goal and assist, just 2:19 part. She assisted on Jalinskas' opening goal 3:27 into the game and then netted a goal of her own with 24:14 remaining. New Haven responded by scoring five straight goals to take a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the way and scored seven of the next eight goals overall to take a four goal lead (7-3) after Mazliah's second of the game with 8:26 remaining in the half. Galler and Reh also scored twice during the run for the Chargers, while Mazliah also chipped in with an assist.
Stonehill was within three (8-5) after Jalinskas scored her second of the afternoon with 1:58 remaining in the half, but New Haven tacked on two more in the final 71-seconds of the half to grab a 10-5 halftime lead. Reh had a hand in both Charger goals, scoring off a Jette feed with 1:11 left and then assisting on Galler's third of the half 36-seconds later.
New Haven scored the first three goals of the second half to stretch its run to five goals and open an eight goal lead (13-5) after a free-position goal from Reh five minutes in. Jalinskas scored her third of the game 22-seconds later, assisted by Doherty, but the Chargers extended their run to 5-1 to open the half on goals by Maher and Reh 67-second apart to open a nine goal lead (15-6) with 21-minutes to play.
Jalinskas and junior Logan Snelling (Duxbury, Massachusetts/Duxbury) broke up the run with back to back goals separated by just 39-seconds to pull Stonehill back within seven (15-8) with 16:11 left, but would get no closer. New Haven scored the next three goals to open a ten goal lead (18-8) on Reh's 57th goal of the year with 11:36 on the clock, before the Skyhawks made a late push to cut the final margin to seven as Jalinskas capped her career day with three goals in the last five minutes.
Stonehill (6-8, 5-7 NE10) is back in action on Wednesday, for its final NE10 matchup of the season, at Saint Michael's College at 2 p.m. The Skyhawks need a win and Assumption College to lose its final two NE10 games to earn a spot in the upcoming NE10 Tournament. New Haven (10-5, 7-4 NE10) visits nationally-ranked Bentley University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
