#25 Assumption Runs Past Women's Lacrosse, 16-6

Reilly's six goals lead Greyhounds who break game open with nine-goal run

EASTON, Mass. (March 28, 2018) – Assumption College, ranked No. 25 in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, wrapped a nine-goal run around halftime to claim a 16-6 victory over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action on Timothy J. Coughlin '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium tonight.

Junior Sarah Reilly (Fairfield, Connecticut/Fairfield-Warde) led Assumption with six goals and an assist for seven points, while collecting four draw controls. Sophomore Callie Dwyer (Merrimack, New Hampshire/Merrimack) netted three goals and added three ground balls, a draw control and two caused turnovers, while junior Kailyn Hart (Cohoes, New York/Shaker) registered three points with two goals and an assist. Sophomore Emily Spath (Franklin, Massachusetts/Franklin) chipped in with two goals, while senior Meghan Cushing (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) totaled a goal and assist with three draws, three ground balls and a caused turnover.

Sophomore Kyra Goucher (Derry, New Hampshire/Pinkerton) made four saves in the Assumption goal, with two ground balls, as the Greyhounds posted a 31-14 advantage in shots for the contest, including 23-5 in the first half to build a 14-2 halftime lead. Assumption converted 5-of-10 free-position shots, while limiting Stonehill to just one free-position attempt. Sophomore Bailey Grant (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) made six of her nine saves in the first half, adding six ground balls and a caused turnover in goal for the Skyhawks.

Senior Lauren Smith (Westhampton Beach, New York/Westhampton Beach) recorded the first three points of her collegiate career, finishing with two goals and an assist, while adding three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Classmate Brianna Doherty (Walpole, Massachusetts/Walpole) added a goal and two assists, while sophomore Jennifer Wheaton (Dartmouth, Massachusetts/Dartmouth) tallied a goal with three draws. Senior Kelly Healey (Westwood, Massachusetts/Westwood) chipped in a goal, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Assumption took charge by scoring six of the first seven goals in the first 13 minutes of the game, including three from Reilly and a pair by Hart, surrounding Smith's first career goal for Stonehill 4:53 into the contest. Healey broke up a four goal Greyhounds run with her 12th goal of the year to pull within four (6-2) with 15:09 remaining in the half, but Assumption reeled of the last eight goals of the half, including two more from Reilly and three by Dwyer, to open a 12-goal advantage at the intermission (14-2).

Reilly extended Assumption's run to nine goals with her sixth of the night a minute into the second half. The lead would grow no more, with Stonehill regrouping and outscoring the visitors 4-1 the rest of the way. Wheaton ended the Greyhounds run with her second goal of the season two minutes later off a feed from sophomore MacKenzie Pleshaw (Franklin, Massachusetts/Franklin). Doherty set up junior Logan Snelling (Duxbury, Massachusetts/Duxbury) for her fourth goal of the season with 25:13 to play and then Smith capped her two-goal night with an unassisted tally with 19-minutes to go.

Spath broke up the Stonehill run with her ninth of the year for Assumption with 8:58 on the clock, before Smith turned provider to Doherty for her tenth goal of the season with 3:09 to go that close out the scoring for the night.

Stonehill (4-4, 3-4 NE10) is back in action on Saturday, when it visits No. 6 LIU Post for a non-conference matchup at noon. The Skyhawks return home on Saturday, April 14, to host No. 2 Adelphi University at 1 p.m. Assumption (5-3, 2-3 NE10) visits No. 4 Le Moyne College next Wednesday at 7 p.m.
