#18 Women's Lacrosse Holds Off Saint Michael’s, 12-8

Vetter and Booth lead the way for Skyhawks with three goals each

EASTON, Mass. (April 20, 2017) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 18 in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, picked up its fifth straight win with a 12-8 victory over Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action on Timothy J. Coughlin '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium tonight.

Seniors Elizabeth Vetter (Great River, New York/East Islip) and Shannon Booth (Pearl River, New York/Nanuet) scored three goals apiece to lead Stonehill to victory. Vetter also collected five draw controls, three ground balls and a caused turnover, while Booth added five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Junior Brianna Doherty (Walpole, Massachusetts/Walpole) registered two goals and an assist with two ground balls and a caused turnover, with freshmen MacKenzie Pleshaw (Franklin, Massachusetts/Franklin) and Jennifer Wheaton (Dartmouth, Massachusetts/Dartmouth) each chipping in with a pair of goals.

Freshman Bailey Grant (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) posted four saves in the Stonehill goal, adding a ground ball and caused turnover. Senior Grace Gunning (Norwell, Massachusetts/Norwell) kept Saint Michael's in a game in which it was outshot 37-13 with 15 saves, four ground balls and a caused turnover.

Senior Paige MacKinnon (Lowell, Massachusetts/Lowell) paced the Saint Michael's attack with three goals, adding five ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Sophomores Ellie Clark (Smithsburg, Maryland/Mercersburg Academy) and Alex Vincent (Rush, New York/Our Lady of Mercy School) each netted two goals for the Purple Knights, while Clark also chipped in with two draws, a ground ball and caused turnover.

Stonehill scored the first four goals of the game, from four different players, on its way to a 7-1 halftime lead. Booth, Vetter and Wheaton all netted two goals for the Skyhawks in the opening half, including three of the four goals in the opening run that consumed 22-minutes of the first frame, while Doherty had a goal and assist in the first half.

Stonehill's lead peaked at seven goals as Pleshaw opened the second half with her first goal of the night 5:17 in. Saint Michael's followed with a three goal run, including back-to-back goals from MacKinnon within three minutes, over an eight minute stretch to close within four (8-4) with 14:38 to play. The Purple Knights were still within four (10-6) after a free-position goal from Vincent with 6:33 on the clock before the Skyhawks sealed the win with goals by Doherty and Booth within a 40-second span to restore a six goal cushion (12-6) with 3:13 remaining.

Stonehill (9-5, 8-3 NE10) returns to action on Saturday when it hosts New York Tech, ranked No. 6 in this week's Nike/Lacrosse Magazine Division II poll and 13th in the IWLCA Division II poll, for its Alumnae Day at W.B. Mason Stadium at 2 p.m. Saint Michael's (3-9, 2-9 NE10) visits Bentley University next Wednesday, April 26, at 7 p.m.
