Vetter paces Skyhawks with four goals, Grant posts seven saves
EASTON, Mass. (April 8, 2017) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 19 in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, excelled on both ends of the field in posting a 17-5 victory over American International College in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action on Timothy J. Coughlin '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.
Senior Elizabeth Vetter (Great River, New York/East Islip) paced the Stonehill attack with four goals, to go with a ground ball and caused turnover, while freshman Bailey Grant (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) backboned the Skyhawks defense with seven saves, collecting two ground balls. Junior Taylor Shannahan (Mendham, New Jersey/Morris Catholic) filled the stat sheet with a goal and two assists for three points, to go with eight ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls.
Freshman MacKenzie Pleshaw (Franklin, Massachusetts/Franklin) netted three goals for Stonehill, with three ground balls, while classmate Jennifer Wheaton (Dartmouth, Massachusetts/Dartmouth) totaled three points with two goals and an assist, and five draw controls. Senior Jenna Gilman (West Allenhurst, New Jersey/Ocean Township) scored two goals and added two ground balls.
Senior Riley Brennan (Wilbraham, Massachusetts/Minnechaug Regional) led American International with a goal and assist for two points as five different Yellow Jackets scored goals this afternoon. Freshman Chelsea Davis (Boonton, New Jersey/Boonton) posted eight saves in 25:41 of relief of senior Alexis Torosian (Hopkinton, Massachusetts/Hopkinton), who registered four stops.

Stonehill took control early with the first five goals, including three-straight by Vetter, over the opening ten minutes of the game. Pleshaw opened the scoring 3:23 into the contest with an unassisted tally, followed a minute and a half later by a marker by senior Kiki Ryan (Salem, Connecticut/East Lyme), before Vetter reeled off three straight within a span of 1:14 to open a five goal lead.
Brennan broke up the run with her 19th goal of the season with 17-minutes left in the half, but Stonehill scored the last two goals of the frame to take a 7-1 lead into the second half. Wheaton's first goal of the game, off a pass from Shannahan, came with 12:16 remaining, followed less than three-minutes later by a free-position goal by Gilman with 9:32 on the clock.
Pleshaw scored the first two goals of the second half to push the Stonehill lead to eight (9-1) after a free-position tally after 4:19. AIC scored two of the next three goals to trim its deficit to seven (10-3) after senior Jessica Lawler's (Mexico, New York/Mexico Academy) ninth of the year, assisted by Brennan, with 23:33 still to play.
Stonehill sealed the win with the next five goals over the following 14 minutes to open a 12-goal advantage (15-3) after Gilman's second of the game with 9:52 left. Five different Skyhawks scored goals during the run, with Shannahan notching a goal and assist.
Stonehill (6-5, 5-3 NE10) returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts rival Bentley University for an NE10 matchup at 7 p.m. American International (1-9, 0-8 NE10) hosts Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
