Nies and Conese lead Dolphins to key NE-10 win with five point games
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (April 6, 2013) – Le Moyne College, ranked No. 7 in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, wrapped a seven goal run around halftime to claim an 18-9 victory over 9th-ranked Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action at Ted Grant Field this afternoon.
Juniors Victoria Nies (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) and Kathleen Conese (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) both registered five points to lead Le Moyne to the key NE-10 win. Nies netted a game-high five goals to go with five draw controls and two caused turnovers, while Conese added three goals and two assists with a pair of ground balls. Freshman Kaitlyn Armstrong (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) contributed three goals, while senior Brenna Bauer (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) posted two goals and an assist for three points. Senior Gabrielle Kamide (Deferiet, N.Y./Carthage) chipped in a goal and two assists for her three points with three draw controls.
Sophomore Molly Marbut (Edgewater, Md./South River) preserved the win with 11 saves in the goal for Le Moyne, adding three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Le Moyne finished with a 31-23 advantage in shots for the contest, converting 5-of-11 free-position shot attempts, while forcing 15 Stonehill turnovers and committing just eight while converting 11-of-13 clear attempts. Stonehill registered a 17-12 edge in draw controls, converted 6-of-10 clears, but was just 2-for-7 on free-position shots. Sophomore Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) made four saves over the first 41:20 in goal for the Skyhawks, before yielding to senior Caitlyn Taveira (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) who made two stops and conceded two goals over the final 18:40.

Senior Heather Sullivan (Andover, Mass./Andover) led Stonehill with five points on four goals and an assist to go with three ground balls, a draw control and caused turnover. Senior Kayla Green (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) and junior Kelsey Shannahan (Mendham, N.J./Morris Catholic) both contributed two goals and an assist for three points, while senior All-American Kelsey Reilly (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) added a goal and assist with nine draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover. Junior Mary Lee Mahony (Yardley, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) dished out two assists.
Nies opened the scoring 1:05 into the game with an unassisted tally, but Stonehill responded with the next two goals to take its first lead after a Sullivan marker, assisted by Green who scored the Skyhawks opener, with 26:46 left in the first half. Le Moyne regained the lead with 17:45 remaining after goals from Conese and Armstrong. The Skyhawks scored three of the next four goals to reclaim the lead twice, the latter after a Green marker, assisted by Mahony with 15:07 to play in the half. Mahony had both of her assists during that stretch, while Reilly and Sullivan each added goals.
Conese, Nies and Bauer each recorded a goal and assist during a three goal Le Moyne run to take the lead back and extend it to two (7-5) after a Bauer goal, from Conese, with 12-minutes left. Sullivan pulled Stonehill back within a goal with an unassisted marker with 9:47 remaining, but senior Jennifer Fabian (Clay, N.Y./C.W. Baker) sparked a run of five straight goals for the Dolphins to close out the half and open a six goal cushion (12-6) at the intermission. Le Moyne had five different goal scorers during the run, but Kamide dished two assists during the stretch.
Le Moyne added the first two goals of the second half to extend the run to seven with goals from senior Kelly Condon (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) and Nies in the opening four and a half minutes to extend its lead to eight goals. Stonehill scored three of the next four goals, including a pair from Shannahan, to draw back within six (15-9) after a Sullivan goal with 8:42 on the clock. The rally stopped there, however, as Le Moyne scored the final three goals of the contest, from three different players, to seal the win.
Stonehill (7-4, 6-2 NE-10) returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts 12th-ranked Bentley University at W.B. Mason Stadium at 7 p.m. Le Moyne (6-2, 4-1 NE-10) visits Assumption College on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
