Reilly leads Skyhawks to 10-2 halftime lead with four goals
MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 3, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, got back on the winning track with a 16-8 victory at Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action at Dr. George J. Larkin Field tonight.
Senior All-American Kelsey Reilly (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) led four Stonehill players with four point games with four goals to go with five draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover. Senior Heather Sullivan (Andover, Mass./Andover) and junior Kelsey Shannahan (Mendham, N.J./Morris Catholic) both added three goals and an assist, with Sullivan also tallying two ground balls, a draw control and caused turnover. Junior Mary Lee Mahony (Yardley, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) dished four assists for the Skyhawks.
Senior Kayla Green (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) netted three goals for Stonehill while sophomore Brooke Rudden (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) posted a goal and assist. Sophomores Emily Faherty (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) and Keri Gould (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) both chipped in with a goal each.
Sophomore Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) posted eight saves in the goal for Stonehill as the Skyhawks held a 27-26 edge in shots for the contest. Armstrong stopped 5-of-7 free-position shots against her, with the Skyhawks converting on 3-of-5. Southern New Hampshire held a 14-12 edge for draw controls, with Stonehill successful on 11-of-13 clear attempts and the Penmen clearing 6-of-7 attempts. Freshman Maria Ploof (Middlebury, Vt./Middlebury) finished with four stops in the Penmen goal.

Sophomore Emily King (Florence, Mass./Northampton) led Southern New Hampshire with three goals and two draw controls. Classmate Lindsay Bucknam (Bow, N.H./Bow) added two goals, two draw controls and a ground ball, while junior Phoebe Clark (Concord, N.H./Concord), sophomore Ambra Maymon (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and freshman Alexa Allen (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) each chipped in with a goal.
Neither team scored for the first seven and a half minutes before combining for three goals in a 22-second span to produce a 2-1 lead for Stonehill with 22:10 left in the half. Reilly struck first off a feed from Rudden with 22:32 to play, before King equalized just 11-seconds later with an unassisted tally. Green's unassisted marker just 11-seconds after that started a three goal Stonehill run that would give the Skyhawks the lead for good.
Rudden scored a free-position goal before Reilly netted her second goal off a feed from Sullivan with 20:51 remaining for a three goal lead (4-1). King added her second for SNHU 14-seconds after Reilly's goal, but Stonehill closed the half with six straight goals for a 10-2 halftime lead. Shannahan led the run with two goals and an assist, while Reilly contributed two goals and Mahony dished a pair of assists.
Allen opened the second half scoring with a free-position goal 2:23 into the frame for Southern New Hampshire, but Stonehill fired in five of the next six goals to extend its lead to 11 (15-4) after Faherty's goal, assisted by Mahony, with 14:29 remaining. Mahony had two assists during that stretch for the Skyhawks, while Sullivan netted two goals. SNHU scored four of the last five goals in the contest, with the lone Stonehill marker coming from Green with 8:10 left, but it was not enough to close the gap as the Skyhawks won for the second time on the road with their seventh win over the last eight games overall.
Stonehill (7-3, 6-1 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday when it visits 7th-ranked Le Moyne College for a key NE-10 matchup at noon. The Skyhawks return home next Tuesday, April 9, to host Bentley University, currently ranked 12th nationally, at 7 p.m. Southern New Hampshire (5-5, 4-2 NE-10) hosts 5th-ranked Adelphi University on Saturday at 4 p.m.
